I've been poking around looking for a second steel so that I don't have to keep breaking down and setting up my Thomas. I saw this ad on craigslist for a 12-string 4x4 Dekley. Owner is asking $1195. Looks good. Anyone have any thoughts?

Dekleys are extremely well constructed, and don´t
wear out easily, therefore fairly safe to purchase
in condition "used" ; just make sure none of the
parts are missing ; it can be time(& cash)consuming
to find parts for an instrument that´s been out of
production for decades ; check the Dekley Forum, one
of the members used to be a mainstay in the produc-
tion of these great guitars...McUtsi

I think the Dekleys I've heard - and the few I've played - were really fine guitars. They played and sounded very good to me. The pakkawood they're constructed out of is pretty dense, and hence heavy, but I imagine an S-12 wouldn't be too bad.

I also agree with Ulric on making sure it's in tip-top condition with proper parts. Unless I knew the seller, I personally would probably be a bit nervous doing a long-distance deal on Craigslist - they specifically recommend dealing locally. Sending money to a stranger - not a dealer - in Atlanta GA when you're in Ithaca? It may be just fine, but if it wasn't, what would your recourse be? Just a thought.

Here's Craigslist's caveat:

Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee. More info.

Thank you for all the replies. I certainly did have some reservations about the age of this guitar, not to mention the "long distance" factor. I think I'll stick with something a bit newer and either close to home or within the forum.
If anyone knows of or has an S-10 or S-12 in the 600-$1000 range that is relatively lightweight, let me know. I'm looking for something that will travel relatively easily.

Somebody Posted THis in The last few Days.

FWIW...Sacramento, Calif. Craigslist has a Dekley S12 listed for $600 OBO but no pics.

$1195 isn't all that good of a price and Somebody has removed the Mica off the Front. The Pickup Cavity has been Modified to accept a George L pickup. I have doubts if the George'L made any improvement. The Dekley Standard pickups are very good.

In Short its been tinkered with.

If You are looking for a Lighweight Guitar Then The Dekley is not for you. If you are looking for a Quality Constructed Guitar with excellent tone,Sustain and mechanics, The Its The Dekley You Should be considering.

Check out the Dekley Website and Information Resource Forum at http://dekley.com/

There is a Beautiful Red Dekley S12 that belongs to one of our members, Mike Wheeler That Should give you and idea of what they are supposed to look like

500.00 and no bids as of now. Notice he has spelled pedal wrong and that means anyone who searches PEDAL STEEL GUITAR will miss it.I found it because I have Dekley saved as a favorite search. I want to bid so bad but really don't have the funds to spare. I could take it and mine an come up with a Universal and the make the levers and use different pedals for the other one.

PLEASE NOTICE I have no ties to the seller but I think it looks like a deal from what I see. Scott
