Can anyone name a steeler that was later a popular singer recording artist? I know drummers, bassmen, guitarist and keyboard men that moved into the limelight but I cannot recall a steeler that did.

I forgot about Barbara. I knew that Wayne Newton played steel but as far as I know he was a singer first. I didn't know Paycheck played steel for anyone before becoming a singer and I didn't know Buck even played steel. See what you can learn!
Anymore????????

I was told that Eddie Rabbitt was a steel guitarist.

Also Ted Daffan ("Born To Lose," and "Blue Steel Blues" ) was well known as both a singer and steel player.

Oh, and Jr. Brown. Smile

One more... the guy who was married to Amy Grant before she married Vince Gill, and who had a show on TNN back in the day. He played steel, but his name escapes me.

Singer/songwriter Billy Mize was a great steel guitarist in his day. Another songwriter who was originally a steel player was Curley Putnam.....JH in Va.

Rick Derringer used to play a little bit of steel.
Nils Lofgren plays it also, although I've never heard him.

I heard one time that in addition to being a singer and guitarist, Steve Wariner is also a steel player and I heard he had an Emmons steel and also, Tim Hensley, who is a singer and Kenny Chesney's guitarist, is a steel player. Jim Bob Gairrett told me that he'd gotten his Zumsteel from Tim Hensley.

Brett I think you're right about Steve Wariner. He wrote a song called "Atlanta, my greatest loss" and, if I remember correctly, Steve played bass, guitar and steel on the session as well as writing and singing. I had the album but I can't find it. The rest of the album was done with Bob Lumans band when they worked together.

Just a comment... there are quite a number of steel players that sing also, but the original question concerned popular singers that were previously steel players.

So to me that means Doug Sahm/Wayne Newton/Sarah Jory etc. yes; Jim Vest no, though Jim is most certainly a fine singer but has not made his mark professionally as a vocalist. Same could hold for Weldon Myrick, another fine singer who gave it a good shot, but didn't cross over into fame as a vocalist.

BTW, 10 years ago today, my buddy and fellow Scorpio groover Doug Sahm left this swirling vortex of despair we call "existence."

Just thought I'd cheer everyone up... Wink
