Taylor Swift is now entertainer of the year!! Apparently the youngest ever at 19 years of age. She is one of my favorites. Just follow this link to youtube and watch and listen to the lyrics and great steel guitar backup. Country music is so much more than the two chord, drinkin, cheatin, lyin songs of Hank Williams. It is important for us to adapt to change - the dinosaur failed to do this and is not with us any more!! Here is the link - enjoy!!

Sorry for such a quick response but since there appears to be such ignorance regarding the definition of country music - here is a short tutorial:

Country music (or country and western) is a blend of popular musical forms originally found in the Southern United States and the Appalachian Mountains. It has roots in traditional folk music, Celtic music, gospel music and old-time music and evolved rapidly in the 1920s.[1]

The term country music began to be used in the 1940s when the earlier term hillbilly music was deemed to be degrading and the term was widely embraced in the 1970s, while country and Western has declined in use since that time, except in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it is still commonly used.[1]

In the Southwestern United States a different mix of ethnic groups created the music that became the Western music of the term country and Western. The term "country music" is used today to describe many styles and subgenres.

Country music has produced two of the top selling solo artists of all time. Elvis Presley, who was known early on as “the Hillbilly Cat” and was a regular on the radio program Louisiana Hayride,[2] went on to become a defining figure in the emergence of rock and roll. Contemporary musician Garth Brooks, with 220 million albums sold, is the top-selling solo artist in U.S. history.[3]

While album sales of most musical genres have declined, country music experienced one of its best years in 2006, when, during the first six months, U.S. sales of country albums increased by 17.7 percent to 36 million. Moreover, country music listening nationwide has remained steady for almost a decade, reaching 77.3 million adults every week, according to the radio-ratings agency Arbitron, Inc.

tb,
You can stand in a garage but that don't make you a car.
Every band I have ever been in play a little of everything but we called the material what it was.
Country, pop, jazz, swing or rock and roll was just that.
Some good has come of this. I know a few youngsters that have "discovered" Hank Williams Sr. and think that is great music. Maybe in their search for "country" music more will discover the source. I think the ignorance lies in the younger set not knowing or being able to hear the earlier music.

More young people are turning to classic country than you think. A couple of years ago was on the road with a young artist [Joey Allcorn] check out his site. We played Cash,Faron,Webb,Buck, etc with a heavy rock-a- billy style. all so a LOT of original tunes along the same line.We played six or seven southern states, Most of the clubs were PUNK rock clubs. What did they go crazy over ? Hank Sr.,Webb,Faron,Wenn,Earnest,Cash was their favorite. It freaked me out to start with when these kids with green and purple hair with nose rings asking for these classic country artist. We played Tootsies often and this stuff we did went over well. Joey has a new CD out that's really good with some great pickers on it, Mr. Don Helms,Johnny Hiland,Lloyd Green, etc. check it out. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

A very big difference I notice between old "classic" country live shows and what is out there now, with a few exceptions, is the widespread use of sequenced tracks accompanying the talent as well as digital devices and other sound production stuff greatly enhancing a live performance. Back then, what you heard was what you got, but now a days I'm not sure what I'm hearing, so I don't know what I've got. "Is it live or is it Memorex?"

Walter,

I know what you're talking about. I think it's all about the show nowdays, fog, lights, etc.... I'm not sure that the music is strong enough to stand on it's own two feet the way it used to. Oh Well

I was listening to a morning radio show on the local radio station, the morning after. The jocks said the only way they could tell it was country, was there was a few wearing cowboy hats. That's the deal now put a steel guitar in a song and it's a country song, please don't get me started. But that's what happens when you get some suit in LA, or New York, telling some program director at a station in Witchita, play this song it's country when it's not.

The definition of country music that tbhenry talks about seems to have its emphasis on sales and $$$$$$$$.
Taylor swift can sing as much crap as she likes as long as it makes millions of record sales under the country label.
It is what record companies want these days , blur the definitions of music genres and sell it anyway you can.

In every genre of music the grass roots traditionalists who emotionally try hold onto their musics identity are having to listen to watered down and sometimes completely altered releases under the traditional label, ie Taylor Swift "country artiste".
Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
My stomach muscles hurt so much with all these belly laughs.
Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad
And sad that good country gets ignored by the CMA.

Things like Taylor Swift winning entertainer of the year is what made me quit watching country award shows 15 years ago. That and canned music.

I wasn't going to comment but ...
Taylor Swift is one thing that's hard to take, unless your 16. But How about Carrie Underwood (who can sing) doing her Madonna impersonation with hot pants and dancers all over her?
But nothing can compare to giving the likes of Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish) best new country artist. Is this a race card being played or what? Jeez.. Considering all the struggling new real country artists out there, I had to grab my remote!!
OK I got it out of my system (until next year and I can't imagine what that will be like!)

OK that one did puzzle me, and not because of anything to do with race.
How can someone win "New Artist Of The Year", when he put out his first record 18 years ago and has sold over 25 MILLION records in the past 15 years, AND the stuff he's doing right now doesn't sound much different than his earlier "Hootie" stuff.
To me anyone who has sold over 25 million and been in the business for a couple of decades, is NOT a "New Artist".
