I am flying to Oklahoma today for a long weekend with family. I know there's a couple of cool places to check out steels, so I want to take my bar and picks. Will I make it through security...with the bar and picks? I'd hate to find out they think it's some kinda weapon. Well, they constitute a sonic confusion device when brought into close proximity with certain other metals, like nickel and plain steel. I will only have carry-on luggage. I'm sure they'd see the bar on the x-ray and question "what the hell is that thing."

I've never had a problem with that. Once or twice I got asked what it was, but it was more curiosity than anything.

I think it depends on the airport you go through as to what they question. I just went through Bush in Houston, and they unpacked my back pack because of a dozen golf balls.

I use a BJS bar and they wanted to know what it was filled with. That's the only problem I've had.......so far! By the way,...what are they filled with?.....mica or something like that.

I never mind when they need to look in my carry-on - that's what they are supposed to do if they can't identify an object from the x-ray.

When I have my bar and picks in carry on luggage, I put in an 8/10 picture of me playing the steel. Works great so far. Jody,

I thought I'd put them in the front pocket of the bag and take them out in plain sight, put them in the tray with my wallet and stuff. They could see the stuff in plain sight, and I'd return them to the pocket the same. Sounds like I wont have too much of an issue. How's O'Hare in Chicago treated anyone?

Funny story: I was flying to a gig in Nashville a few years ago and had the same concern. At security, I pulled the bar out and put it in the little container with my keys -- I wanted it to be out in plain sight so it didn't look like I was hiding anything. Security pulled me out of line, wanting to know what it was. They, of course, had no idea what a steel guitar was. After about 3 different levels of security came by, they finally brought it back it back to the supervisor. He came out laughing -- holding the bar in a way that showed he obviously thought it was "phallic" -- and said, "I don't even want to tell you what I thought this was." And they let me take it on the plane.

I had no problem taking it on the plane in Nashville!
