In addition to being a beautiful classic, Mike Nesmith is joined on "Joanne" by a very tasteful steel player in this clip. He is featured at 4:16. Who is it? Would it happen to be Red Rhodes himself, who played on the original? I found a photo of him online, and it bears resemblance.

Btw, the lead acoustic player is very talented as well. His phrasing is very intuitive. All around, a great version of a classic performed by seasoned pros. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Hey Skip, I knew that guitar player looked familiar. What a great band. Did you know Red? _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Hey Chris...
Sure, I knew Red. His shop in Hollywood was a major hang for us players. I spent alot of time there, as did most pickers.
Red was quite a guy, and I miss him. |

Very cool, Skip. I can only imagine what went on in Red's shop back in the day. Some amazing history there for sure. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

That was just GREAT! Thanks for posting Chris. That Nesmith stuff w/Red was an early influence for me. I don't know that I've ever seen footage of Red playing. What a beautiful song.
And w/Jorgensen on guitar to boot! Nice clip. _________________ Zumsteel 12 Universal

I saw Mike in '71 at Marvelous Marv's in Denver.Red was playing. He was a little too far back in the mix but did get off some nice stuff.Seeing him wasn't the only thing that led me towards playing steel, but it played a part.Thanks,Red.....Mike too. |

I'm a Nesmith nut, Dave (as you can tell by my avatar)...can you share more info about the show you saw? Was it the First National Band with John Ware on drums and John London on bass? Remember any of the songs they did? The steel Red played? |

I always forget that Red Rhodes's playing on James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" record was a prime influence - like "Harvest", it was one of those records that had that sound floating around that made me go "hey, what is that?!".
Also, once while working at Roger Sadowsky's shop, I was cleaning out a big box of old sample pickups - things that had been demo'd in guitars and then stashed away - and I found this thing called 'Velvet Hammer'. I thought that was the best thing I had ever seen!
Wish I had hung on to that pickup, but I think Roger had me put it on eBay!

Nice clips of Red playing with Nez. I have always liked his approach.
Here's a snapshot of Red's hand near the end of the "Twilight on the Trail" solo - anybody have any idea what is on his ring and little fingers? Sorta looks like he's tying them together somehow.

"Joanne" was one of my favorite songs of the period. Simple, yet elegantly different and beautiful.
Thanks for reminding me of it again.
(Oh...while searching, I also found this parody of the Nesmith song and an old Japanese monster movie. I guess you could say it cracked me up! )
