Can anyone recommend software that will help you remove duplicate files. I know I must have hundreds of the same files in different directories.

The above application is well regarded. I haven't used these things for several years, but as I recall they just look for duplicate file names or identical file sizes. You then have to decide if the 2 files are in fact the same thing. The application doesn't actually know if the two files in fact have the same content.

I use an old program called DupeLocater. It does compare the file contents and let you easily select which ones to delete, if any. You can still find it free.
