As much as I love pedal steel, in my opinion some of Hughey's and Emmons' best work was supporting the vocalist, be it whoever. I don't guess I've ever heard "Touch My Heart" described as a Buddy Emmons instrumental with a little vocal by Ray Price...not to offend any E fans 'cause I love his stuff as much as you'all do..just saying his fill work supported Ray's vocals.Speaking of great vocalists, I'll put John Terry up against any non labeled singer and above most all of todays 'country' singers. To borrow from Johnny Bush, he is a diamond in a field of zircons known today as "country music". But don't take my word for it, just come to Cowskin Prairie at Grove Ok tonight Oct 12 and judge for yourself...and his supporting pedal man is none other than John Buffington. You'll see a five piece traditional country band that'll shuffle your socks off.Music at 9 and they serve the grub beginning at 5 PM. Remember that Hezakiah 3:1 says, " he that tooteth not his own horn, the same shall not be tooted" |

Larry my friend, I smile everytime you use that scripture, because a friend of mine (Jerry Horner)used a paraphrased version of it some 30 years ago..."If you don't blow your own horn, no one else will"... www.genejones.com |

I agree 100% that backup and fills are important and can be used to measure a steel guitarist's total effectivenes as a 'steelist'. However, I must say that it is not near as challenging to back up the great singers like Ray Price, Keith Whitley, etc.. as it would be to back up ...say....Bob Dylan! ....OK..."Lay Lady Lay" had some steel playing I think ...but as I recall it wasn't that noteworthy. Which proves my point! A steel player that can sound good behind the vocals of Bob Dylan...well this is the ultimate test for the ultimate steel player!

Anything would sound good along side of Bob Dylan's singing!
Easy now! It was just a joke. |

I don't think it's a joke that Dylan wasn't a singer when he started. He's improved a little over the years.
I have son that was a fan of his from the start, and i'd say Steve, he's so far off key how can you call that singing? He thought about it for awhile and said, Dad, it's like he's one of us.
