It sounds like you don't have a "recording" device selected in the Sounds Panel, in the Control Panel.
What Operating System do you have? It makes a difference in how devices are selected. |

On the Vista system, there is nothing in the Playback or Recording Panels? Or just nothing in the Recording panel?
One trick, uninstall your sound device in the Device Manager, then restart the PC and the sound will be detected and reinstalled. This resets the sound status with Windows (Vista). To access the Device Manager, hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break Key. You can access Device Manager from the next panel that comes up. In the Device Manager, RIGHT click on your sound device to highlight it and the LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC.
After Windows reinstalls the sound, go to the sound panel and see if there is anything listed in the Playback (it should be your speakers) and Recording - and if you have the System Mixer or What You Hear select that as the "recording" device. |
