Just announced...
This year's guest of honor John Ely of Asleep At The Wheel fame will hold a

in Joliet, Illinois.
This Q & A seminar is free of charge for all convention attendees.
Here's your chance to ask John about tunings, picks, chords, repertoire, phrasing, Hawaiian vs. Western Swing technique etc. in a friendly, informal setting.

Hi Paul,
Glad you are going to make it. Bring some of your beautiful National Tri-Cones with you. I'd love to get a group photo of all the Tri-Cones (and owners) in attendance (I'll probably have to turn off the flash).
Yes, the seminar will be held in the same hall where the daily concerts are held, it's the largest room in the hotel.
A definite time for the John Ely seminar has not been set yet. Though I can say with confidence that it will be held after the dinner break and will begin sometime between 8 and 9 PM.

Gerald-I am just thinking which Tri-cone to bring-and I am wondering if this will be the type of seminar where those of us in attendance will be able to have our guitar with us as we learn or just take notes? I am thinking that having a lap type guitar with my Rockman personal headphone amp may allow me to get the most out of John's teaching |

Paul,
Sorry if you misunderstood me and what I meant about the Tricones. I meant that I wanted to take a group photo sometime during the weekend. If you remember, at last year's convention there were about seven or eight vintage and current Tri-cones in attendance and I missed the opportunity to snap the photo then.
The seminar's planned format will be primarily question and answer. There will be no group or individual instruction. John will be fielding questions on technique, vibrato, repertoire, amp settings, picks, practice tips, chord substitutions, phrasing etc.
Start compiling a list of questions, I know that I am.

Gerald-Ok-thanks for the info-I will bring a few National Tri-cones-the pristine condition engraved ones don't leave home much but I was thinking of bringing my earliest style 1 and 2&1/2 (I know you will have your clean Style 2 along with you) [This message was edited by PAUL WARNIK on 20 September 2002 at 12:59 PM.] |

Gerald-just one more question-I do not know what guitar/tuning John Ely will be mostly using for the seminar-I guess the 8-string Fender Stringmaster-do you by chance have his tuning(s)??? |

When I saw John Ely on tour with Asleep At The Wheel last month in Ann Arbor he was using a double necked Stringmaster.
Tuning wise... a few years ago John wrote a very informative article about the pros and cons of the most popular non-pedal tunings (C6, C13, B11, G, E7, C#m). He can definitely discuss these.
I'm not sure which tuning will be discussed and demoed during the seminar. Remember... the seminar is very informal, there is no set curriculum, the participants questions will steer the flow.
