I had the distinct pleasure last week of going to Nashville, and finally meeting Bobbe Seymour in person at his Steel Guitar Nashville shop. I also bought a copy of his "3 Pedal, 2 Lever Instruction Video", and had the opportunity to see him using his "trick pedal" a couple of days later, when he played at the "Nashville Palace". I think that most all beginning and intermediate players, and even some advanced players can benefit from his no-nonsense video.
No, you won't find a bunch of those hot single-note licks on this video, but you will find a lot of full-chord stuff that's pleasing, and quite different from the typical one and two-note commercial steel sounds. Bobbe's "sweeping" playing style certainly gives fullness and added personality to the instrument.
As an alternative to just "adding more levers", he shows how much that can be done with just two. The real beauty of his "Z-lever" idea is that it can be added to most guitars without actually adding any pedals, and without losing anything you already have! Most players are already lowering the E9th 2nd string, and all that needs to be done is to add a pull or two to that same lever.
Bobbe, I appreciate the time, stories, and the ideas you shared with me on those two days...despite your busy schedule. |

Donny Hinson, thank you for the wonderful post, we also enjoyed your long overdue visit to Nashville. I was impressed by your coming by the store to see us before you ever even checked into your hotel! I have , like everyone else, enjoyed you on this forum for a long time and got to like and respect you before I ever met you. Kathy was a treat to meet also Donny. I only wish everyone else on the forum could get to know you personaly also as you are a real treat to know.
After you left, Lloyd came by the store to check out the two knee ("Z") lever setup he had been hearing so much about. He watched me for a while then played it himself. He found many very interesting harmonies and chords that I hadn't even found yet. He stated that he was very impressed and felt it could be as important as the "A and B" pedals to the future of steel guitar. I sure love what he played with it. He also stated that it was an important "Musical" lever change and not a "Lick" lever. This is my feeling also.
To anyone reading this post, LLOYD IS BACK!! And playing better than ever AND is about to be extremly busy doing what he does best. "MASTER RECORDING SESSIONS!!" I feel his second wind could be even more interesting and fruitful than his first. A nicer person this couldn't happen to.
Donny, thanks again buddy, so great to meet you face to face.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Bobbe does a nice demonstration of his "finger-style" playing on this tape, also. Though there's no instructions on this technique, it would be worthwhile for anyone who's into the finger-style type of playing.
And, it's a good way to get even with those lead players with the B-benders! |
