When I finished microwaving my coffee on high power for 40 seconds I opened the door and a fly flew out.How can this be? I took my cup out and he flew right back in.I closed the door and nailed him again, high power 30 seconds,I opened the door and again out it flew!!!He turned around and went back in for the third time,30 seconds high power again, opened the door and your right, out he came again!! What is it with these little guys?I guess the old saying goes is true,"after the bomb is dropped the only thing that will be left are frogs, flies roaches and coyotes"
Guys, this is a true story, somebody explain how this happened.(I can't wait to hear Professor Pollard's explanation.)

Did you drink the coffee. If you did, you better not ever watch the sci-fi movie,
"The Fly". |

Maybe he flew through a flaw in the flu, or am I the only one old enough to remember that poem. Sorry Ray, couldn't resist. I do share your curiosity.

Well I can't explain it and I didn't know flies could survive in a microwave but I did zap a roach for 2 minutes one time and it didn't affect him at all. I have heard of this before but never heard it explained so maybe somebody here will know how it can be?? |

I heard that a micro wave was great for drying one's hands but I can't figure out how to keep my hands inside and close the door at the same time? |

Chas,The poodle thing has already been tried.
Earl, your supposed to use the towel "NEXT" to the microwave, buy you books, send you too school and all you want to do is play your guitar.

Ray, um... not to put a big damper on things or anything, but, according to the theory of natural selection, this would be possible only if the background level of radiation in your environment were gradually increasing such that successive generations of flies had increasing resistance to radiation. You sound like a miner who just found a dead canary. (Oops! Did I say that??) Just kidding (I hope!) |

I'm no expert, but I think you are suppose to use a mirowavable dish. To do so, place the fly on the dish and if the fly won't stay in place, then smash the darn thing.
Cook, then season to taste!!
Enjoy!! |

As a serious guess at an explanation, ..the fly is small compared to the size of the inside of the MW, ..the field in the MW is uneven (that is why the rotation). I suspect that the corners are not in the radiation pattern, and that the fly seeks the location(s) of least discomfort. Try taping a small piece of cheese/or? in the corners and see if it survives.
Or maybe we just blame Saddam for having sent radiation proof flys as spys? |

OK I just got the answer from my organic chemistry educated daughter, and you are not gonna like it.
Recently, something was in your MW which had fly larvae on, which means some fly was sittin on the food you put in the MW before you put it in there and left a bunch of eggs behind. . This was most likely within 12 hours or so. Anyway, the fly larvae hatched ( at least one of the eggs ) then you opened the door and the fly flew out.
The entire life of the common fly is around 72 hours . I asked my daughter why the fly did not fly out when you opened the door the first time ( putting your coffee in the MW ) and she said, "You'll have to talk to the fly about that " Wise ass kid...
well, take it or leave it..
tp
or if you don't buy this you could do the cheese experiment, but I would tape the fly to the cheese first to insure a good successful experiment.[This message was edited by Tony Prior on 27 September 2002 at 12:41 PM.] |

microwaves used in microwave ovens, similar to microwaves used in radar equipment, and telephone, television and radio communication, are in the non-ionizing range of electromagnetic radiation. Non-ionizing radiation is very different from Ionizing radiation . Ionizing radiation is extraordinarily high in frequency (millions of trillions of cycles per second). It is, therefore, extremely powerful and penetrating. Even at low levels, ionizing radiation can damage the cells of living tissue. In fact, these dangerous rays, have enough energy and intensity to actually change (ionize) the molecular structure of matter. In sufficient doses, ionizing radiation can even cause genetic mutations. As shown on the frequency spectrum, the ionizing range of frequencies includes X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays. Ionizing radiation is the sort of radiation we associate with radioactive substances like uranium, radium, and the fall-out from atomic and thermonuclear explosions.
Non-ionizing radiation is very different. Because of the lower frequencies and reduced energy, it does not have the same damaging and cumulative properties as ionizing radiation. Microwave radiation (at 2450 MHz) is non-ionizing, and in sufficient intensity will simply cause the molecules in matter to vibrate, thereby causing friction, which produces the heat that cooks the food.
Here is the answer I found and remember from years ago
