Anyone familiar with Joe writings on technique, specifically the right hand? He seems to advocate a fairly horizontal picking hand. Plusses/minuses appreciated.

I find Joe's Secrets of the Wright Hand would be helpful towards building right hand dexterity. He also emphasizes economy of motion. There are something like 32 right hand picking patterns and grips that he demonstrates. The only thing is, they are exercises and without musical context. This is the one problem for me, because I just never had time to sit and work on technical exercises. Don Burrows does sell a little practice board that would go great with this kind of workout. I have one, and it's pretty cool: http://bsgsteelguitars.com/practice.htm

While I never got into this video in much depth, it inspired me to examine my own right hand technique and pay much closer attention to how I work out licks and musical ideas. I don't think I could get used to the hand position that Joe uses (it seems geared to pedal steel playing) but, like I said, it makes you examine your own and find what works for you. It's important to be aware of bad habits, too.
