I'm a part-time luthier, and I've been building all types of instruments since the 60s. One thing I use a lot is an Excel Spreadsheet to calculate fret positions. You just enter the string length and it immediately calculates everything you need. You can calculate either natural or equal temperament, diatonic or chromatic scales.

If this is of use to anyone just email me at afbrookes@aol.com and I'll send you a copy. I don't know how to post the file on this forum.

I'm bumping this because, from recent conversations on the Forum, there are many members who still have questions about how to draw out fret positions.

Thanks for the spreadsheet.

A lot of information to digest!

I've been most gratified at the response from members. When I first posted this in 2006 I had just one inquiry. This time I've had about two dozen so far. If I've missed anyone, and you don't get a reply from me within a day or two, please send me a reminder.

By the way, I can't send Excel files through the Forum, so you really need to send me your email address for me to respond.

Thanks again. Very Happy
