Finally saw Kapena De Lima play steel, and the kid is good. He's got a nice touch, good tech, and injects some fine swing in his playing of faster numbers when it's appropriate. Keep an eye out for him! Just give a listen to any of the tunes here off the debut CD by Hawaii's new first family of Hawaiian music - www.cdbaby.com/cd/delimaohana to dig what they have going.
Kapena has been in school on the West coast for much of the year, using the net to get his steel parts back home for the CD and not often in the islands to enable catching him on stage with his family. But yesterday afternoon they played at the Honolulu Borders book store and they were great. I was suprised how really good they were, each of them.
Kapena was the last student of Jerry Byrd, or at least one of the very few at the time of his illness and subsequent death. Jerry must be all smiles watching his legacy continue in quality style.
The youngest De Lima, Lilo(?), who plays bass very well, was messing with the steel just prior to the show, and said "no, but it's fun!" when asked if she played steel. So there's maybe yet another one for the future!
It was nice to hear the dad give credit where due, at times to Genoa Keawe and others who have paved the roads for today's players.

'Kelly Boy', the proud papa, has long been a part of the local scene, and has many CDs out with his Hawaiian pop group, Kapena. But this Ohana affair is in the classic/traditional style that should provide a long run for the family.

Ron,

Just love the classic sounds. The full vocal harmonies on the slower tunes are fantastic!

Ulupalakua
and Koke'e sound awesome, great upbeat tunes!

Thanks for the link.

Josh

I enjoyed the De Lima Ohana Island music. Cool

The person singing Alika sounds just like Aunty Genoa. Cool

I could hear Jerry Byrd's influence in Kapena's steel guitar playing. Smile

Mahalo Ron for posting this album.

You are doing a good job keeping us updated on what is going on in Hawaii. Keep up the good work.Very Happy

Aloha, Smile

Thanx, Don, somebody's gotta do it. And when there's such talent like this bunch keeping the fires burning for the steel and good Hawaiian music it's a pleasure getting the word out.
Too bad you missed the show, and that I wasn't even aware they were going to play to have gotten it on tape..., but it was a nice suprise. I'll be ready next time.
I havn't found a web site for the Ohana yet, they need one!
