Hi everyone!
A friend is going to Hawaii in October. Honolulu Oct. 17 -19 then Maui for a week I think.
Can anybody recommend live music to see? Any recommendations welcome!

Hawaiian, or Slack Key, or any! Thanks!
Mark

Mark, I was there in July on the exact same schedule. I couldn't find any steel or traditional Hawaiian music in Honolulu at the time but found out later that one sunday a month featured steel guitar at my hotel, the Outrigger on Waikiki beach. In Maui we went to the Lahaina Luau and heard a real nice old school Hawaiian trio with a very good steel player.

Always check these two sources below for Island travel and music:

Check this website for general information about Hawaiian entertainment with Hawaiian steel guitar
You should be able to find something suitable.

The HSGA Website for Maui. This may be outdated but gives you a hint.

There will be a kanikapila on Oct.18 @ Waimea Valley, it use to be called Waimea Falls Park. We had the first kanikapila there this past Sunday. We sit in a circle and have at it. It will be on going, 3rd Sunday of the month. Slack-key, ukulele, steel guitar and voices. Check out www.taropatch.net - kanikapila Oahu forum. The Abrigo ohana set this one up. You can check them out on youtube. Very talented kids.
Oh, by the way this is my very first post. I've been lurking in the back ground for the past 6 years.

Welcome, Uncle Braddah! I've edited your post to include a direct link to the topic on the Taropatch forum. The videos (linked in that post) make it seem like a lot of fun!

Uncle Don, we had a good one going this past Sunday, Ron Kanahele had his Susie there. Eddy Kaiama was on steel, bass, as well as slack key. So 'ono loa!!!

Mark, yes this is a great site. Hope to meet you at the October 18 kanikapila. Entrance to the park is free with lots of parking.

Brad, thanks for the link, We've had kanikapila's at various places on O'ahu. The music and the potluck was great.

Mark, would you be able to recognize Uncle Braddah? If not, I have a good photo of him and Eddie Kai'ama.

Of course, I would want his permission to post it here.

Aloha, Smile
Don

And here is a video of what Uncle Braddah is talking about. Cool

The following YouTube video captures the Waimea Valley Kanikapila.Cool Cool

There are three Hawaiian steel guitar players panning from left to right -- Eddie Kai' ama, Ron Kanahele, and Lionel Kahilihiwa, aka, Uncle Braddah.

Lionel, Uncle Braddah, is the one playing the steel with legs about 48 seconds into the video. Both Eddie and Ron are playing Rickenbacher Bakelites left handed.

Ron Whitfield has a very good webpage of live Hawaiian Music activity here on Oahu. It doesn't show dates it was updated, ...but certainly worth a try to write down the Players / Venues he lists and call the venues once your Friend arrives in Hawaii, to see if Ron's info for that venue is current.

I'd be delighted to have your Friend visit the house here for some hillbilly / beach-bumb / Kamaaina Aloha overlooking or on the backyard beach; IF he/she cares to email me in private and we can set that up. My contacts are here.

Thanx, Denny. Hope all is well!
Don mentioned the site early on in a sentence.
I keep it up-to-date providing the site isn't doing it's all too often freeze up which stifles the fun/input.

Mark, your friend would be well advised to take Denny up on his offer. Good people/place/music!
