Topic: Anyone else using a .015 on the 4th string? |

| I was looking at various string sets and noticed Paul Franklin does this. I use to run .012's on my 3rd all the time. I figure I may give the .015 a shot. Who knows, it might just reduce some of the extra travel needed for the 3rd pedal. |

Yeah David. I use a 15 on my Zum. I can't really tell much difference in the travel and just a tad stiffer feel. I've been using it for about a year trying to combat 4th string overtones and make the sound a little thicker. I've also been using a 13 [v. my normal 12] for the 3rd. string. The jury is still out on that even though they last as well as 12's and sound a bit stronger. We'll see.
It's not a big tuning adjustment to change from a 14 to a 15. I'd suggest trying one to see how it works for you. |

For the last 2 years or so I've been using this for the first 5 on E9:
.014, .016, .012, .015, .019.
Be cautious though. If you leave the .015 on there too long it can break without a warning sign. I had a .015 break only twice in 2 years, because I had left the set on there too long. I usually change strings after about 25 hours of pedal mashing, with no fear of using the C pedal. Jagwires only!

| I buy my strings as singles, some bulk... Using .012 on my 1st & 3rd and .015 on my 2nd & 4th not only cuts down on the number of different strings (2) it also sounds better, to me. I pull the first a whole tone a lot, and it has also cut down on breakage. |

I have been using a .015 for several years for the 4th string E.
1st: .013, 2nd: .017, 3rd: .012, 4th: .015, 5th .018, 6thth: .020, 7th: .026w, 8th: .030, 9th: .036, 10th: .042, 11th: .054, 12th: .070
this is my S-12U E9th/B6th
works good for me, the strings are George 'L' Stainless.

My Zum likes .013(1).015(2).013(3).015(4).019(5).022p(6)
I've been using these gauges well over a year and absolutely love them! I upped the gauges because the Zum was sounding lite on high side. These larger strings did exactly what I hoped they would. I've had the Emmons PP at home for a year or so....still can't believe it! |

I went to a 12 on the 3rd string quite a while ago but never gave a thought to a 13. Has it worked out well for you?

| Erv, I have done this for over a year with the Zum and have never broke a third string. I do use a blitz cloth and only change sets about every 4-5 months. Go figure! |

I think that I'll have to give it a try.
Even with a 12 on the 3rd string, it still sounds kind of thin.
I am presently playing a Zum, also, and really like it! |
