I"ve NEVER approached 'playing a song' the way you've outlined it here.
WHY NOT.......get that tune in your head, lock it in tightly......and then try and play the sweetest, simplist chorus you've every played? No fancy stuff, no banjer rolls, no bar slams, no stomping on pedals....... just something like John Hughey might be expected to play. Wring out all of the emotion that you possibly can.
Make the g'tar 'cry'.........
Don't try and put a roof on the house until you've built a strong foundation.......... That's the way I see it. |

scale to open, modify the melody for the middle, scale to close.
all these with embellishments, of course, but gives you a nice part AND sticks to the song.
