This has alway been one of my most favorite AJ songs. I would live to get an accurate tablature for this song. Also possibly the effects equipment used to achieve the sound.

Below is a video of Alan performance at the 1993 CMA singing Midnight in Montgomery. The steel player plays the lick almost identical to the album version. Does anybody know who this steeler is. Is this his steeler Robbie Flint or is this Paul Franklin or maybe someone else.

Ben, are you refering to what the steel plays on the intro ?
This is what I'm hearing:
(~~ means let the note ring)
Following the two bars without steel,
Tab:

...Dm.............................

1--13~~~--------------------------
2-----13~~~-----------------------
3---------------------------------
4--------13~~~--------------------
5-------------------13A~~13~~13A--
6----------------13~~~~~~~~~~~~~--
7---------------------------------
8-------------13~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~--
9---------------------------------
10--------------------------------

....C7.............................Dm...

1---------------------------------------
2---------------------------------------
3---------------------------------------
4---------------------------------------
5---15A~~15~~15A---15A~~13A~~13----13A--
6---------------------------------------
7---------------------------------------
8---15~~~~~~~~~~---15~~~13~~~13L---13---
9---------------------------------------
10--------------------------------------

I don't know who the steel player is, but he's obviously comfortable with leaping up there into Hugheyland in the pitch dark. ha.
This same theme repeats several times with minor variations. If you feel like going up into Hugheyland as he does, first turn on a light, Smile and then swoop up to fret 20 using your B and C pedals.
It doesn't sound like anything too weird as far as effects go, perhaps just an overabundance of reverb for that ghostly effect.
Regards,

- John

That tab is exactly how I've been attempting to play it. but those first 3 notes seem to blurr to much together. When I hear this on the album, the first three notes are sustaining but it's like the first two notes sustain a little less and then by the time the 3rd note is hit, the first two notes have already died down enough not to blur the 3rd note. Maybe there is a dynamic ducking delay in the mix.

Or maybe I am crazy and hearing things and reading too much into detail. I just know when I play it, it just doesn't sound quite right.
