Not to come across as the "Kanye West" of steel guitar but what in the world is Barbara Mandrell doing in the SGHOF?
No disrespect to Barbara, she is one of the most talented people on the planet and I think it is great that they have opened the door to female players. But seriously, how many people even know she is a steel player?
My wife was a fast freind and next door neighbor of Barbaras for many years and while she was aware Barbara was a very talented multi-instrumentalist, she had no idea she played steel until I pointed it out to her one day. I showed her a picture in Winnies book of Barbara behind a Sho~Bud (not her guitar I don't believe, there were others sitting at the same guitar in the book). She appeared surprised to see Barbara associated with that bunch.
Did she play on any big records?, tour with anyone? Really, I mean other than sit in "Cookies" lap once in a while as a novelty in her show picking a few notes has she really done anything major with steel guitar?
Again, no disrespect meant, but there are female players out there that have put steel guitar in front of more people in the last few weeks than Barbara has in her entire career. And by all means if I overlooked something here please jump in and correct me, but I just don't feel this was the right nominee for SGHOF. I simply do not get it.

High time steel players got together to angrily denounce this blight known as the Steel Guitar Hall of fame.
John: How much did she spend to get this delicate, feminine depiction cast in bronze? Do you think she got her money's worth? |

The insinuation that someone could buy their way into the SGHOF is an insult to our friends who sit on the board.
I know every one of these men, and their reputations are beyond reproach. There is no way in hell that they could be bought or bribed. The plaques are paid for by the organization, which is non-profit by the way.
This suggestion of impropriety is uninformed. John Floyd, you are way off base here. Money has nothing to do with induction into the SGHOF. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Read the detail on the plaque. That says it all. She has done much to promote the instrument across a number of countries. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I was very glad to see Barbara inducted. She has spent her entertaining life promoting steel guitar. She was also the first woman I remember seeing that played steel guitar. I believe she has just as much right to being in there as anybody else. I think what makes it seem a little off is that a lot of the players in the hall are past session guys and road warriors. Way to go Barbara. |

I think more people know that Barbara plays steel, than Cindy Cashdollar. Now when it comes to steelers we know many great steel players that none steel players never heard of. Many people heard of Pete Drake and not the Big E.^The word FAME means"widespread reputation . She has it . They could have picked someone defferent, but they didn't, they where not wrong in picking Babbara. Joe |

I remember when the Mandrell Family played the NCO Club at March AFB, Ca. and Barbara was picking the heck out of her psg. I had the pleasure of dancing with Barbara and her mother during break time. This was back in the 60's, I forget the exact year. IMO, a fantastic show, great music and I love the whole family. |

She's in the HOF for bringing steel guitar to millions of people with her NBC variety/music show and her worldwide tours back in the 1980's. That's her main contribution.
I'm reminded of the 11 year old girl who took pedal steel lessons from me back in 1981... because she had been so inspired by Barbara Mandrell. That's why Mandrell is in the HOF... for Expanding the Popularity of steel... AND she's a great player. I saw Barbara play steel live in 1974, and she was excellent.

Doug,
She was an excellent player! And might well be to this day! That is not the issue here.

I don't recall any steel session work by Barbara, and she could hardly be called a steel guitar "road warrior". _________________ John Drury

Yes, but she's truly famous (which seems like a good enough criteria for a Hall of Fame to me), and probably the biggest celebrity who can legitimately play the heck out the steel guitar. There's always next year for everybody else. |

Like Bob, I'm rather shocked that someone would bring up dishonest motives in the induction process. My post was not meant to be one of displeasure, but just a candid expression of my utter surprise, since she was not one of the (half-dozen) players that I had been thinking would be in contention this year. (Shows how much I know, huh?)
Anyhow, before I could really elaborate, the mob was off and running.
I apologize for my part in initiating this "spitting fest". |

Neither of those are necessary criteria for the SGHOF. After all, we have builders in the HOF, and promoters like Tom Bradshaw. It's a matter of one's overall contribution to steel guitar and I daresay Barbara Mandrell put the steel guitar out in front of more millions of people (TV viewers) for many years than some of the other names being passed around. And, yes, she does (or at least did) have the chops to warrant it. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Examples of such activities might include promoting and/or conducting concerts, forming steel guitar clubs, organizing promotional events, producing, writing and publishing, etc. List the continuous years the nominee devoted to these various activities. |
