Sounds great Doug. I've never played Sleepwalk in any tuning other than C6. I think it lays out perfectly in C6 and as usual, your rendition is wonderful and true to the orginal recording. Keep up the great work boy! |

I really like how you make it sound like a guitar and not some 21st century compressed, lifeless machine. Especially the use of volume (not pedal, but how hard you pick) that makes the reverb peek out on the loud notes, just a little.
You've done this before, haven't you? |

Thats awesome. What a cool guitar too.
I like playing this one in c#m7...plus you can get the low bass string walkup. But I never really bonded with that tuning. I need to try it in c6 again. |

I especially liked the way this song was arranged and played.
I have heard many renditions of this song over the years where the player did an outstanding job of improvisation and was all over the place with it to the point one could wonder what song he was actually hearing.
This was done in great taste wihout taking away from or trying to improve on Santo & Johnny's original recording.
Thanks Doug for sharing, great job, great sound. |

Thanks for all the positive comments! Much appreciated. The songs I'm working on are for 6-string lap steel... E, C, A, G, E, C (high to low)... but the tablature will work on most 8-string C6 tunings. I'm using my D-8 to record the songs, with only 6 strings on it for this project! I removed two strings so I'm not tempted to cheat and pick any additional strings.

Thanks, Danny. I like improvisation as much as anyone, but I also like exact melodies, especially with the steel guitar classics. I used to play a lot of improv in Sleep Walk, trying to somehow "take it to the next level" ...until I realized that the beauty of the song lies in it's single note simplicity and Santo's unique vibrato, tone, and feeling. Adding more stuff changes the song, and the haunting mood of the melody is lost, in my humble opinion. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Hi Doug,
Beautiful job. It's good to hear that old '56 sing!
I too appreciate your restraint in not adding a bunch of extra notes, fills, improvisation, etc. It's a classic tune that would be hard to improve.
Have you tried Teardrop? It's a crowd-pleasing classic too, and lays very nicely in C6. It's good to have another S&J tune in your bag when you and the band get tired of Sleepwalk.
I look forward to your book.
All the best,
Bob |

Great steel playing, Doug. A lot of beef in those notes. You are a master!!
What's with the drums? Is that an electronic drum set? That part sounds really odd to me. _________________ -ššš- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Doug
There are one or two occasions (where you slide into single notes on your top string) where you have absolutely nailed Santo's sound. Some people think that it is basic playing, but Santo had so much dynamics in his picking. One second he would almost be ripping a string from the guitar, and the next would be a soft caress with the pick. Trying to emulate his feel is very difficult but you are the closest I've heard, and that is a real compliment. Well done. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator.
