hey everybody,
I'm a new member here on the forum, and I'd like to say hello. I've been eve's dropping here for a few years but I'm happy to now be able to converse with all you good folks. I live in northern vermont, where I work with kids and play pedal steel. I own two fessendens(D-10 & a rosewood frame and one half size which I will be advertizing here soon), I also have a fender 1000 which i learned to play on. Some of my psg playing friends up here are Jim Milewski, Jerry Fessenden, Gordon Stone, and Ryan Mickey. The one thing I do that's unique to steel guitarist's is use sitar picks. I love 'em, Jerry does not... well anyway, there's my spiel. - good day

Welcome to the Forum Brett.
It's OK to use sitar picks if you want here on the forum. Just don't mention pick blocking. |

Welcome, Brett.
What are "sitar picks"? How do they differ from the National finger picks that many of us use? _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

hey b0b,
here's a picture of some sitar picks. These are similair to the ones I use. You put them on so that the metal goes across the middle of your nail, (lengthwise) and then also across the middle of the pad (lengthwise), with the point right at the end of your finger(smash 'em on good!).
These allow you to feel the string with the pick and your finger simulataneously and then just the end of the pick when you let the string go. The downside to these are most tonal. There is alot less metal used to make them (making it sound thinner and sometimes too bitey). But if you shape them well and don't dig under the string too much they sound great. Blocking is much easier. I never think about. And you can do rhythmic things or slow sweeps with the backsides of your fingers, rather than the plastic thumb-pick.
If you order them get the large ones. I think there are a lot of Indian people with small hands. I always stop by The Music Inn on west 4th street manhattan when I'm there and stock up. I think it would be cool if this worked for others too. - Brett

I lost track of my sitar picks years ago, way before my involvement with steel guitar. Always wondered how they might work for steel but never got motivated to find some. Now my interest is rekindled. |
