No prob. Anthony. 8 string Dual Pro? Looks like it's mostly technique. The tuning is probably different and there's that doo-wah effect with the tone control, but aside from that you could probably do that on a pedal steel.
Looks like the boys are having a good time too. |

I was so blown away by those two little breaks. I've heard lighting fast steel licks but this was so different.IMHO.I really like HankIII stuff, I'm huge fan _________________ Tony Ch@vez "UNWOUND" |

Hi Anthony,
Andy sounds great on those clips.
You might really like Speedy West.
If you haven't checked him out already that is.... |

Andy Charles Gibson, really a very good steel player for this venue, he's been a good friend for many years. This is the perfect job for him, I tried it for a few months, drove me nuts! (Charlie fit right in! )

Anything that can be done on straight steel can be done on pedal steel. (However, the reverse is not always true.) It's picking and bar work, left hand and right hand...rather fast and loose, to be sure, but certainly doable. |

One consideration is that, because he is standing, it is easier to reach the right hand over the left. Definitely showy, but playing his butt off, too. Stirs up the idea factory in the back of my brain. |

I think this style would for sure inspire someone to want to pick up the instument just watching this clip for the first time. I can't speak for everyone but the first time I watched it,I was like Ho&^ Sh! %. It's just different. _________________ Tony Ch@vez "UNWOUND" |

Those clips are a great example of someone making steel guitar relevant for younger people. Say what you will about the music, Andy Gibson can irrefutably play. Makes me curious about how Hank III's band fits into the Steel Guitar Forum Robert Randolph debate of the month (although it seems here that PSG is deemed more debate-worthy than non-pedal). Also relevant to the alleged speed vs. taste dichotomy.

Asa, yes, good post. Although that's not what I'm into personally,
I love what Andy Charles Gibson and Robert Randolph are doing and can do for steel guitar. This is what steel needs to bridge the gap to the new young minds that wish to be musicians today.
Andy and Robert are very good players that are reaching the new players that matter today. The players that will be tomorrows star heros. This is good.
I know both Robert and Andy very well, great personalities, good people and it shows up in their playing. The more styles that steel can be accepted for playing, the wider the acceptance will be for this great instrument.
Andy can play many styles and does the "Hank III" (Tricephos) style because he's paid to play it.
I still love Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Johnny Smith, but the majority of young guitar players were hooked by J. Hendricks, Van Halen and the jumparound distortion players of today. Not my cup of tea but then I know they don't like what I do, that's fine too.
Andy and Robert? Go gettum' boys!

I was quite surprised at the emotion that clip stirred up in me... can't exactly put my finger on it.
Listening to it made me feel almost... angry. |

I feel outta breath just watching that!
There is NO WAY you can do that stuff on a standard PSG.
1. You MUST have a tone control to do the boo-wah stuff.
2. Standard PSG E9 or C6 has too many strings in the way of the bar crashes.
3. You really need those bright Fender pickups, a George L ain't gonna cut it!

Marc, angry is quite the relevant emotion in a lot of today's young music, so a good guitar body slam is in order much of the time. However, I would describe Andy's demeanor in the HIII clip as more energetic than angry. A quality that steel guitarists could utilize more.... otherwise seeming stoic and staid at their instrument. Something about standing up seems to interject a certain vivality too as mentioned.
Some good points by Twayn. Certainly the chromatic strings and perhaps the 6th tuned strings might not sit too well with the framming or fanning of the strings demonstrated in places.
I still believe it's quite possible to achieve this technique in spite of the aforementioned hurdles. Maybe as much mental as physical. |

incredible. I loved that!
"Makes me curious about how Hank III's band fits into the Steel Guitar Forum Robert Randolph debate of the month"
That "debate" boiled down to simply wether or not it was insulting to call another mans music "noise".
good comparison tho. both are great players and extreme stylists playing music outside the box to non trad crowds. |

I'm not so sure. I think a large part of that sound is that kind of guitar. Modern PSG's just don't sound like that. I'm sure you could "imitate" some of those techniques on PSG, and that might be good enough for the required purposes, but to really sound like that you need a guitar that sounds like that _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

Well, I sure as hell couldn't do that left hand violin fingering on PSG, double neck fender or anything else. Whoa nelly! |
