I have been using the same string setup for a while on my D8 Stringmaster. I use D'addario Chromes Flat Wound strings for the lower 4 strings on each neck and John Pearse Plain Steel strings for the higher four strings. All of a sudden the individual D'addario Chromes have doubled in price so I looked for other options, the Jagwire 'Herb Remmington' sets fit what I need as far as gauge goes but I notice only the top two or three strings are plain and the rest wound. Have I been making a blunder all this time in thinking plain was best for the four higher pitch strings?

If you want to capture Herb's sound, then use his selection of strings. If you want to do your own thing then the plain strings up to the .022 are fine, BUT any bigger than that you run the risk of the string sounding like baling wire.

Thanx,
Jim
