Lonnie, I'm not sure what is standard for the E13 10st tuning but I am putting this tuning on my D10 console when its done:
B
D
E
F#
G#
B
C#
E
G#
F#
At least that is what I'm starting with. _________________ Bob |

That may not be the standard E13 ten string tuning right now. But I strongly believe that it soon will be. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Bob, Is that tuning upside down? |

that tuning to my eyes is definetly upside down. Usually there is no F# as the first string but I can see a good use for it. |

I think Bob's looking at the guitar from the front.
Seriously, I don't know what would be "standard". I played one for several years tuned like Roy Wiggins' 8 string plus a low G# and E. Low to high:
E G# B D E G# B C# E G#
I think that the low G# is the least needed string in that, and a middle F# would give you a lot of soloing options:
E B D E F# G# B C# E G#
For 12 strings, I'd add an F# as the first string:
E G# B D E F# G# B C# E G# F# _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Tom Morrell had pretty good luck with (low to high):
E D E F# G# B C# E F# G# |

I always thought this was regarded "standard E13" on 8 string because Leon, Herb and Boggs used it
1E,2C#,3B,4G#,5F#,6D,7G#,8E
Nowdays I am not so sure as I know that some people regard this as usual
1E,2C#,2G#,4F#,5D,6B,7G#,8E
A "standard" on a 10 if it were me would be the first tuning and I would add F#,G# on the top two .
1F#,2G#,3E,4C#,5B,6G#,7F#,8D,9G#,10E
I actually think there is more milage in ommiting the low E and including an Eb at string two like
1F#,2Eb,3G#,4E,5C#,6B,7G#,8F#,9D,10G# (or octave lower G#)
I always have trouble thinking of good ways to use the low E outside of the one position and find having the G# in the bass there allows for a nice 6th/Min7 voicing on strings 10, 8, 6, which is the same voicing on the 6th tuning and with the addition of the chromatic strings 1 and 2 quite alot opens up. If I had a 12 I would
like top to bottom
1F#,2Eb,3G#,4E,5C#,6B,7G#,8F#,9E, 10D, 11B, 12G#
Regards,

Leon, Herb and Noel played 8 strings. Tom increased to to 10. It's basicly the same tuning. Just a couple of strings added. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

My 'standard' E 13th:
8 strings (L-H) E B D E/F# G# B C# E (If I am playing a lot of Hawaiian I use the middle E, or if western swing, I sometimes tune it to F#)
10 strings (l-H) E B D E F# G# B C# E G# (This is what I use on my Emmons with pedals)
I am not aware of any such 'standard' E 13th. Try all the suggestions in this topic and choose one or modify to suit your style.
Thanx,
Jim |
