Well guys and gals,

Friday i will turn 50th and i was asked by my wife what i wanted for my birthday! I said nothing at first and then it hit me!!!
I want to go to a club with all my picken buddies and play steel on "Real country" all night, of course with a few cold drinks!
I called a friend that owns a club in what i call enemy territory! You know, where they play pop rock, rap, beach and all that Taylor Swift kiddie stuff!
Told him i wanted his club and was bringing my steel to play nothing but country! He cancelled the punk rock band and said its all yours! Did i mention he is a good friend?
Anyways, friday night my band and i will engauge the enemy armed with a steel, fiddle, chicken picken tele and a singer that cut his teeth on George, Merle, Gene and Paycheck! Can't say we will come out alive but what a damn birthday present for me! 5 minutes from USC and the college crowd! Did i mention there will be alot of steel? Laughing
It will be a strange sound around the 8 other clubs in the vista downtown! Laughing

Kenny,

I just turned 51 at the end of July. Doesn't really hurt that much. Good luck at your gig. Wish I could be in the audience cause that sounds like my kind of music.

I've seen that quote about "aiming low" attributed to Bob Wills. I always thought it was his, but maybe not.

That's as good of a birthday present as I've ever heard of. I just turned fifty too. I can't tell much difference in 50 and 49. I know you'll enjoy your special gig. Smile

When I turn fifty I'd probably do the exact opposite. I'd end up playing some heavy hard driving rock 'n' roll in front of a country crowd. I can just imagine someone in the crowd saying "Is that the steel guitar making all that noise?" Mr. Green

Go ahead with your bad self. Sounds good to me,I too cut my teeth on Jones, ET and ol' Hank and Lefty. I hate that kiddie stuff too. Have a great birthday Kenny. I'll be 51 in November so have a few for me.

Kenny, Joe, I'm not positive, but I think the actual quote "Shoot low boys, they're riding shetland ponies" is attributable to the late humorist, newspaper columnist, writer, and stage comedian, Lewis Grizzard. The phrase was used as the title to one of his books, published in 1985. It's possible he got it from Bob wills since Bob Wills passed away in 1975. After doing an extensive search I can't find any references to the phrase and Bob Wills. It's also possible that the phrase is an American southern colloquialism, and all three of these individuals borrowed it.

In any case, Kenny, have fun at your birthday "party"! Cool

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn (57 years and still tickin'!)

I love it when they walk up and ask me what kind of key board i'm playing! I always say it's a "Yamaha" Laughing

If you can do that stuff on guitar I'd love to hear you rock out on steel! Happy 50th birthday!

Happy Birthday, Kenny -- my wife got me a similar present at my request when I turned 50 (only there was more rock & 6 string in the mix, but then this is not exactly a "country" town plus it would take me all night just to play your version of Alabama Jubilee). It was a blast, especially when the drummer brought along these guys that played a bunch of Bob Wills stuff.

Btw I take it you've seen the Youtube clip with steel version of a Steve Vai tune? http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=164968&highlight=vai
