Hey Mike, what's the reasoning for having a 16 ohm speaker in the Classic 30 amp? I know they make (or made) an extension cabinet for these which I assume would drop it to 8 ohms when plugged in. Would it do any harm to the amp to change the standard speaker to an 8 ohm? I have a very nice ElectroVoice 12" speaker that I'm wanting to put into something but it's an 8 ohm model.......Thanks, JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

While you wait for Mike's reply, I'll mention that you can insert a dummy plug into the extension speaker jack, which will switch to the 8 ohm tap. |

If you look at this schematic you'll see that the output transformer has an 8Ohm and 16Ohm Tap.
Hope this helps. _________________ A couple of guitars

What's a dummy plug? Is it simply a 1/4" phone jack that hasn't been used? Are the poles open or do you have to solder a wire from the + to the - ???

Leave it open--you don't want to have the speaker jack see a direct short. |

I'm an electronics dummy to the max but I guess that means I could just take a 1/4" phone plug that's never been used (I have a couple of 'em) and just stick one of 'em in the extension speaker jack and that'd do it?..........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

If you are familiar with all of the Classic 50 Series products, they came with 16 ohm speakers wired in one configuration or another depending on the power amp.
The Classic 30 comes with a single 12" 16 ohm speaker so that when an extension 16 ohm speaker is connected, the minimum load on the amplifier is met, ie; 8 ohms.
It would be OK to change out the internal 16 ohm speaker with an 8 ohm, but we recommend that you do not connect an extension speaker to the amp at that point.
Thanks for using our products. |
