Talk about timely!

I was playing yesterday in a jam, and when done, a few people came up with compliments, and from these, the inevitable questions: how do you learn how to play this, or, what does it take to learn it? I did my best for their sincere and courteous curiosity, citing genes, insights, mindsets, opportunities, blah, blah, blah, and, as always, wondered later if it was worthy.

What are some of the ideas out there?

What I do is give them my contact info and tell them to feel free to get in touch. They often do. I've met some great people that way that became friends and a few have become very accomplished players over the years. Players where so nice and helpful to me when I was the annoying guy with a million dumb questions that I feel its only right to try to return the favor as best I can.

For the inevitable what do you tune to questions I give an as simple direct an answer as I can.

For the guys that know everything I either just agree with them or I tell them that they have no idea what they are talking about. It will cost them 2 beers for me to explain why they are absolutely wrong and that I don't have the time right now. The biggest knuckleheads seem to be the living room rock guitar players that read the internet.

Bob, what a wonderful attitude. And I thought the Golden Rule was dead. Good for you Mr Hoffnar. I would buy a few lessons from you anytime, if I lived closer.

When someone asks me how I learned to play pedal steel, I just reply and say "I am still learning". I try and give a demonstration on how it works and most just shake their head and walk off.
