Is anyone using the MagicJack? I ordered one, plugged it up, made a few calls. It looks like everyone can hear me just fine (one said they had clicks). But I get dropouts, like a bad cell phone when they talk to me. The MajicJack site suggests resetting my router and modem - which I did. Haven't tried another call yet but I will.
I just wondered what everyone else thinks of the product. At $1/month, if it works at all it seems like a good investment. _________________ Gary Shepherd

I've had one for about 2 months Now and like it just fine. I have a pretty good ISP (mediacom High Speed Internet). The Main Problem was that I couldn't get a Phone Number in my area code (252), but since I got this to talk to my daughter in the Coast Guard in Charleston, SC. I changed my number to one in The Charleston SC Area Code (843) Works great, She can Call me like its a local call and we have hour long phone calls whenever we feel like it. The Phone Bill - $1.70 per month. Mediacom wants $29.95 per month for essentially the same service. Sometimes I get an echo, but this can usually be overcome by replacing the call. Nothing I can't live with. I think the reason this works so well for me is I have a new 3.0 ghz quad processor computer, 8.0 gb of ram and good high speed internet. This won't work on Dial up and older computers. |

Gary: I used to work at Radio Shack (retired today) We sold these things by the hundreds. My guess is that you probably have a bad unit, it happens occasionally, and you can't talk to anyone at magic jack, only via emails. I would return it in exchange for another one. Al. |

Congrats on retiring. I'll try this one for another day or two. Meanwhile, I might send them an email about it. I hadn't considered that I could have a bad one. _________________ Gary Shepherd

I have had one for about 6 months now and have had no problems. But, I only use it occasionally to make long distance calls. Quality of call is very good. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . My ISP is supposed to update some hardware this week. Maybe things will get better after that. _________________ Gary Shepherd

I opted for a Skype subscription. No hardware was necessary beyond my laptop's soundcare w/mic & speakers but I also have a cheap headset that plugs into the laptop jacks. I bought a Skype number (getting one in my area code wasn't a problem). Sound quality is excellent and I can have calls forward to any other number if I'm not online or am away from my laptop (after 10 seconds, they go to my cell). A few clicks can enable or disable forwarding. You can have multiple computers running a Skype client with the same login ID and they'll all ring at once if the account is called. |

I think Skype is more expensive than magic jack. Magic jack only cost $19.95 per year or $1.70 per month for unlimited calling after the initial purchase of $19.95 for the hardware. |

Yup, sorry, $12 a year, $59.95 for 5 years incuding the initial purchase of the box, I call it a dongle for lack of a better word.. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I guess happy hour & typing to go well together... |
