I have heard that Bobby Black is playing a 12 string non pedal guitar these days almost exclusively. Does anybody know how he tunes it? Does he use Mr. Anderson's tuning?

I think it's a C6 with the high G and chromatics (D and B) on top, same intervals as the E9 top 2 strings. That was a few years ago. I think he is always experimenting.

It's all too obvious to anyone who comes to see me play that I don't know the answer to that question. Laughing

Bobby was in Carson City on Aug 13th playing a Carter D-10 and sounding fabulous as usual!!!!! I didn't ask him about his tuning but it sounded pretty standard to me

I've heard Bobby play 6 string, 7 string, 8 string, 10 string or 12 string pedal and non-pedal steel with various tunings (including Jerry Byrd's 7 string tuning with the C#). He always sounds like Bobby, so I don't think the tuning makes a difference, he's always brilliant.

When he had first gotten his MSA SuperSlide from Maurice, he was using that "Anderson" tuning, then the next time I saw him play it he had done some modification to it or else went back to what he was using on his West Coast Steel 12-string non-pedal, unfortunately I don't recall the difference.

In the past 3-4 years I have seen him play several times, and about half has been on a 12 string non-pedal, and the other half on his Carter D-10.

His playing is "like buttah."

One of my favorite shows he did (and Forumite Billy Wilson played piano on a few tunes) was a few years ago in Petaluma on his Carter, with sometime New Rider Gary Vogenson on a Tele along with a standup bassist. They were playing mostly jazz stuff and standards.

I think his 12 string copedant was listed on the California Freedom album. His C6 had a low A, then standard C6 starting with the low C on the 11th string ending with the "normal" G on the 2nd. Then the D on the first. This is what I use and I find it very handy. Again; A-C-F-A-C-E-G-A-C-E-G-D
Bobby had two D12 Emmons back then, and I believe both were stolen while he was with Commander Cody. He told me some funny stories about borrowing pedal steels while finishing the tour.

I had the opportunity to ask Bobby Black himself about his 12-string tuning. Bobby said that while he often experiments with different tunings, the tuning he is currently using with his non-pedal 12-string is(from low to high):
Bb, D, F, A, C, E, G, A, C, E, B, D

- Note that the 12th string Bb is tuned higher than the 9th string A, and the 11th string D is tuned higher than the 8th string C.
- Also note that the 2nd string B is tuned lower than the 4th string C, and the 1st string D is tuned lower than the 3rd string E.

Bobby's pedal steel is a D-10, tuned in the usual way for E9 and C6 (with first string tuned to D).

Thanks Dave M.. After reading this thread again, I saw it was about Bobby's non-pedal tuning. Now we have the right info.

I've heard Bobby play the Jerry Byrd diatonic tuning. It was amazing, slants all over the place with perfect intonation. He's one of the greatest players around and one heck of a nice guy.
