At www.jukebox.au.nu they have another batch of new Hawaiian LP releases of the last century, including Hula Breeze by Owens which features Freddie on steel, in the Retro grooves/Hawaiian/vintage section.
Also some hot stuff by Bud Issacs from his The Swinging Steel Guitar LP, doing Hawaiian and mainland styles, all live transcriptions!
There's something for everybody at this gem of a site. |

Ron,
Mahalo for turning us on to this site. It contains a wealth of musical history.

Ron:
There is an LP on that site by "Tiny and His Bubbles". Here is a pic of it and I imagine it is a mid 60s to early 70s release:
The band roars through a bunch of hapa-haole standards. It sounds live, but could be fake.
Here is one tune:
Hano Hano Hawaii
The label is from New Jersey, but I don't hear any NY or NJ accents.
I really dig the distinctive steel tone and style on these tracks and suspect it is an authentic bunch of players masquerading under a bogus name as often happened.
Got any ideas who this might be and can you ask around or mail this mp3 to others to help? |

Yeah, that site is full of great old stuff. I would like to know if it's legal to download any of that music, though. On the homepage the site warns that this is not a "download vault" or something to that effect but doesn't have things set up so you can purchase the music other than for a web site donation solicitation (money which I doubt will be distributed to the record labels or artists). |

The guy playing the steel on Hano Hano Hanalei needs a heavier guage steel string on his first string. His string is much too thin and you can hear the "tinny" reverberating sound throughout the number which can be quite annoying to people, especially to a person like me.
Aloha,

Eric, this is a listen only site, but you 'can' record any of it analog via the headphone out which is what I do.
Mitch, thanx for blowing up the LP cover! I listed this one in a previous post about this cool site, and Tiny's group plays it like it used to be heard islands wide. So sad you can't find this musical style any more but with the most rare of exceptions, and then you usually hear about it only afterwards...
Sure would like to know who the steeler w/Tiny is. |

There are utilities to capture the audio stream digitally; I use Audio Hijack Pro on the Mac, and Total Recorder on Windows. |

Eric, the answer is it is not legal to download or record any of the music on that site or most any website unless specific permission is granted. Using audio utilities to grab the stream and save it digitally is similarly not allowed. This site has some material from small labels like Michael Cord's. If people post and distribute his material for free it doesn't give him much incentive to shell out the cash to do more reissues. How much old Hawaiian music is on the record company attorney's radar screens is an entirely different question. |

I've been wondering how this site can offer material that is still out of public domain without legal problems. |
