I have an external hard drive that I've never used because I'm not too sure what it is or how to use it. Also have a couple of "flash" drives. What can be stored on these drives,,,or can they run programs just like my C drive on my laptop? Can I store emails? or run an email (T-bird) program? Or is it basically a media storage,,,which I don't have much of. |

A good use of external hard drives is to back up songs, documents, photos etc in case there is a problem with your internal hard drive. They are typically slower than an internal hard drive at data transfer so its best to use them as storage versus loading and running software from them. I like to think of them as a storage closet to keep my internal hard drive lean and clean. Also you can take your external with you and listen to your songs on another computer. Same with thumb drives on a much smaller scale. _________________ GFI D10, Fender Steel King, Hilton Vpedal,BoBro, National D dobro, Marrs RGS |

There are a lot of applications that you can run from a thumb drive or an external hard drive, see http://portableapps.com/ for a big list.
I never found doing so to be terribly useful, though.
If you have an external drive that you aren't using, I would use it for backups.
Flash drives are good for if you need to give someone some files and you can trust them not to lose it, then you don't have to burn a CD _________________ MSA Semi-Classic S10 w/ 4P+4L and some shiny new tuners |
