Ok, so I've been on a pickup crusade.
I'd love to know what some of you guys are trying that would be out of the realm of the all the usual traditional style pickups that are shipped with Pedal Steels. I have an Alumitone on the way, and I'm looking forward to trying that!
I'm searching for ideas that would perhaps work as a second pickup and that would give me more of a lap steel kind of sound. Like Dan Tyack mentioned in a recent post, it would be nice to have the function of the Pedal Steel but with a lap steel sound. |

A lot of the "lap steel sound" is the size and shape of the instrument, including, no changer. A console guitar, with a changer, isn't like to sound like that. I play a D-12 (former pedal guitar) non-pedal console and it has the "pedal guitar sound".
The best sounding pickups I own are the Bigsby copies that, the late, Danny Sheilds wound. Tonealigners sound really nice, I have them on my Super Pro. I have George L's 5-way pickups on my D-12, with Carvin active/passive electronics. |

I have spent a small fortune chasing "newer" "better" pickups. Usually, when I first installed the newer pickup, I find the tone to be fantastic; however, that infatuation is ALWAYS short lived and I go back to a single coil pickup. I am now using a Wallace TT 17.5K on my Rains and do not see changing it. I have talked to several other players who have had similar experiences. I'm not saying there is not a dual coil out there that I wouldn't like better - I just never found it. My two cents worth.

See if Jason Lollar can make you a ten string Chicago-style pup! Bet he can! That's his Supro/National style pup. I've got one for my 6-string Coodercaster, and it sounds great! |

I'm sure Pete Biltoft from www.vintagevibeguitars.com could make you a 10-string version of his great CC-Rider pickup - it's a mixture of features of P90 and CharlieChristian-pickups (both of which make great lap steel pickups) - very full, big, warm sound, yet also very clear and clean. |
