Saw Mr Cooder & Nick Lowe in Paris yesterday (highly recommended to any other Europeans who have the opportunity). On a couple of numbers Ry was playing a Bigsby 6-string, which appeared to be in brand new condition... I've followed his career pretty closely, but never heard about this guitar before. Anyone know anything about it?
(Incidentally, hardcore Cooder fans will be shocked to hear that on one tune with the Bigsby, he was using a flatpick!)

That's great that you got to see him play live with Nick, Nick.

He rarely plays live here in his home state of California!

Gretsch made some Bigsby reissues in a small batch. I'm not sure if this is what he's playing or not.

Didn't I read several years ago where Ry had at least one of the Bigsby reissues made from original parts--similar to what Herb Steiner has?? I think Paul Warnick had some connection to these?

Ry took delivery of P.A. Re-Issue #2 at Scottys show back in 1996-It is a triple eight Bigsby with five pedals-He has used it on several recordings-A short time later We sent Him a Bigsby steel guitar pickup which He had mounted in one of His "Cooder-Casters"
Ry later said that He loved the sound He was getting in combination with a Teisco guitar pickup in the neck position of the instrument-I don't know if this is the one Ry was seen playing but since then I have received at least two requests by fans of Ry's in other countries who wanted to get a Bigsby pickup like His for their own-Unfortunately I could not help them out-perhaps Ry did find one of those Bigsby Spanish re-issues that were put out by Gretsch in limited quantities (made in Japan) from a few years ago

The guitar I'm talking about can be seen quite clearly in this clip

I hadn't heard about the Gretsch reissues before - I guess that's most likely what it is.

Can't offer any information about the guitar other than to say I saw him use it here in Edinburgh at a GREAT gig.
Tickets were insanely expensive but both he and Nick (both of whom I've liked a lot for a looong time) were singing really well and Ry's guitar playing was beautiful. Joachim C was drumming very nicely and sensitively, too. Fantastic gig and great to see RC again (must be about 20 years since I'd seen him standing up and singing with an electric guitar on).

Oh, the Bigsby guitar looked very nice!

Last time I saw him was 1981. Too long. Little Village was one of my favorites.

Jussi, they were available, but not too popular I believe. I think the frets were just part of the Bakelite casting. You see them infrequently on ebay.

The Rick sounded pretty ruddy good in Edinburgh...and in that "Vigilante Man" clip posted above.
