Prompted by this post I did a little research to see where it was recorded and who did the producing, engineering and in particular who was the vocal backing group.. BOY OH BOY did I find out some interesting facts
1. There is absolutely NO mention of it in Gordon's well researched discography by Matt Dawson HERE..
Very interesting that there is NO mention of the song in most of Olivia Newton John's discography's..HERE or Here
AND did you know that John Denver DIDN'T write it..AND the The Starland Vocal Band did the harmonies on HIS version..
Denver didn't write this song. In fact, when he recorded it he had never even been to West Virginia. Two musicians, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, wrote it while driving to Maryland - they'd never been to West Virginia either! Danoff got his inspiration from postcards sent to him by a friend who DID live there.
The Starland Vocal Band, who charted with "Afternoon Delight" in 1977, sang background vocals on this. At the time, they were known as "Fat City."
Denver was introduced to the song by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, who were married at the time. It wasn't finished, but before John left, they finished it in the form that exists today. John was included as a writer because he did help write the finished product, although he had nothing to do with the origins of it.
Also, the version on YouTube that claims it's the BBC "Top of the Pops" one is in fact and Australian TV one, and the section where the steel is on the original record, the part is played on the video (Badly) by a regular guitarist.. _________________
