Way cool! All my interest in steel is Bobby's fault. 1970, Mandrake's in Berkeley, Commander Cody, and "what IS that sound"! I was a kid at the time. Actually, so was the band, except for Bobby. |

Besides being one of the great players, Bobby is one of the nicest people you will meet in this lifetime. |

I'm proud to have had Bobby as a friend for 25 plus years now. Great steel player and an even greater person

I watched the Black Brothers picking on TV in the early 50s in the Bay area and couldn't wait to get home and watch them. Ten years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby in Porterville CA when he came down to play for Billie Jo Spears her husband Terry Bethel and it was a kick to get to meet one of my early heros. It's great to see the Brothers still playing together and making outstanding music. |

Hey Gary, was that the Hoffman Hayride with Big Jim DeNoon's band in the early 1950s? |

Jason, I believe you hit the nail on the head. I hurried home from school to catch them and what a thrill it was to see and hear live music from these two young kids that really had it together. |

The CD just arrived, and it's just great! It's a barroom recording of the Black Brothers as a hot western swing quartet. It was recorded "live" at Dukes in Sunnyvale, California on May 12, 1984.
I have a box of 30 in stock, and I'll think they'll go pretty fast. Order #CD-BB02P for $14.00 from:
The Steel Guitar Forum
148 South Cloverdale Blvd.
Cloverdale, CA 95425
The name of the CD is "Pickin' in a Skull Orchard". [This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 24 May 2002 at 05:21 PM.] |

Whats interesting is that this might be the start of other reissues.
I suspect the brothers might have other recordings as far back as the 1950s.
I really enjoyed Bobby's two solo albums, I think the modern non-country approach might have scared off a few folks.
If anyone likes Joe Goldmark's early material, I do recommend Bobby Black's two solo albums as well. Bobby also has a new solo set, it's more inpsired by the non-pedal music that he grew up listening to.
Gary, there's some cool photos you probably might have seen, it's from the Hoffman Hayride/Big Jim days when Bobby and Larry were part of the house band.
The photos are from Bobby's first solo album in the late 1970s, I'm hoping that they will use them on ther website as well.
