Played my 1st gig with my steel tonight!! I was pleased and discouraged all at the same time .I thought the tunes I played steel on came off fine.I learned several things tonight # 1 practice the way you play. Wear your shoes , Hat , glassses etc. etc. When you are practicing. I know it's a pain but several issues came up tonight that I never thought about until I played at a gig. the most imprtant thing I learned is I need to practice more . And I thought I was spending alot of time behind my steel. One good thing is I got some pics. I hope they turned out alright. Well I gotta set up and get after it !!

Good work,Shane...field practice is the only way to
move forward...actually,field practice refines the
woodshedding and gives You a chance to get hip to
what´s up with the real world, stage or studio.

Congrats to you Shane......Practice will always pay off.....I've been playing steel for nearly 40 years, and when my guitar is not on a job...it's set up at my home.....and I get behind it and go over things I've played hundreds of times....still trying to find new ways of doing something......Practice is something that should never cease! I, too, have had times on the job that things didn't go just like I thought or wanted them to go....(i.e. miss a lick, hit a wrong note, etc)....but you don't dwell on the mistakes....forget it and go on....learn from it. Craig: How you keep from burning out from practice is everytime you sit down to your guitar....be determined to learn something new.....you'll be surprised at what learning a new lick, or a new way to get an old lick, can do for you....It's an exhilarating feeling.....good luck and have lots of fun "Steelin' "

Ulric, you are so right! I am finding out practice is nothin like the lessons learned on the bandstand.
Hi Craig , I also play lead in my band so if I get tired of steel I just pick up my tele . But some times I just have to get away from it for a few days.Hey Hal!!40 years , man !! that is so Kool ! I can only hope for my steel career to last that long!!
Well I am off to work on some tone. I was not real happy with my amp last night. So I am gonna try something new. Thanks guys!!

This is for Shane Glover--- Shane, I've been playing steel for about thirteen years or so, and like you, I get practice burnout, have had some amp problems, and play lead in my band. I want to pass along, what I do, in case I can be of some help. I've been playing lead guitar for fifty years, and have been through a lot of situations in a lot of different places. One thing you'll find out, whether playing steel, or lead, is your amp will sound terrible in one place, and great in another. At my age(70), my Nashville 400 is getting to feel a little heavy so yesterday, at a steel guitar show, I tried out a Peavy Transtube 112. It sounded perfect at home in my music room, but at the show, it sounded thin and way too trebley. My point is, no matter what amp you use, tone is probably going to be an on-going problem, to be solved, again, almost every time you play in a different place. Probably, the best solution is to use an amp, designed specificly for steel(Evans--Webb--Peavy Nashville series etc.) I try to practice every day, but like you, I'll get to a point where it feels like I'm just going through the motions, so I'll grab one of my guitars, or a bass, and play awhile, but every so often I take several days away from music( go for a bike ride, go to a movie, visit a friend). Some of the best playing I've ever done is after I've taken one of these respites! I don't wear my playing outfit when I practice, but I do always wear the same kind of footwear.
I hope my rambling on, has been of some help. Good luck with your steel playing! (Too much fun!!!)----Jake Jacoby---

Hi Jake , I totally agree with you on the tone issue. I finally found the tone I was hearing in my head when I purchased a Mesa Boogie Lonestar Classic.
To me it is the ultimate amp with a tele hooked up to it. But just like you some nights I just can't get the brown sound . I used to try & fix it but what usually happened was the next gig I played the magic was back. So I have learned not to go crazy when she is having an off night . Or I will be chasing my tail to get the sound back at the next gig. I had an Eq , Midiverb and a BBE on my fender . Sunday I tried everything From using a 15 inch speaker and removing rack gear one at a time. I finally ended up just using the Midiverb and the amp . So I hope I am on the right track . I should have used the KISS method to start with Keep It Simple Stupid. Nice talkin to ya Jake!!

Yup, practice. Then practice some more. Play around a bit, then practice some more...

Eventually I hope to achieve the level of competence that I can control and play with the pick edge angle of attack on the string. There be some neat noises.

Hey Shane - I am a total newbie too.
I am 45, been playing electric guitar for 25 years (tele's & country for last 15 years) and I bought a starter E9 10 string Pedal steel 10 days ago.

I am actually thinking of taking it to my gig tomorrow night.

I would play 3 songs -
People are crazy (in F) (new Billy Currington song)
Dont close your eyes (in G)
Perfect country & western song (David allan coe)

I am not a virtuoso tele player but I think that I can cover most that is needed. I have spent alot of time in the last 10 years learning brent mason & Albert Lee licks so i am kind of used to learning somewhat complicated stuff.

No kiddin, I have been practicing the PSG 3 hours minimum and a couple days 5 hours! My wife is being cool about it!!!

How long have you been playing your PSG?

Am I nuts for thinking of taking the PSG to the gig?

I have played along with the CD (all 3 songs) and all seems to sound good.

thanks!
Don

PS...Ive got the Lonestar Classic..And the New MKV.Its not the AMP...Its the voltage coming from the wall most likely..

Hey Don !

I have been playing PSG Approx 8 months. Give or take, I don't remember exactly when I started. I purchased a Carter Starter several years ago. I bought it mainly to record with & it had a terrible hum I could not get rid of. I ended up sending it back.

Just here recently I got the urge to try again. I found a Maverick on ebay pretty cheap so I bought it. I am not sure what the difference is between then & now but back then I was'nt that interested now I can't get away from it.
I practice 3 or 4 hours almost every night.

I think if your diggin it take it to the gig!! I played it at rehearsal for my guys & they said it sounded good. So the next gig I took it.I've only had 1 gig on steel so far. But it was a blast! Got a good response from the crowd as well. I bought a Carter s10 . And I love it !!

Do you think the guys in your band would have a positive or negative reaction ? If they are kool with it I would go for it!!

Talk to ya later !! Shane

Mickey !! You are the reason my 1st gig was was at 8 mo. instead of 2 years. 90% of what I play I learned from you!

As for the Lone Star, We need to get together some time and I'll tell you the story of how I got my My Boogie. As for the MKV I read a few months ago Boogie was coming out with something new.At that time it was all speculation. Since I got my Lonestar I have not kept up on amps. I am too busy practicing. That and the forum. Keep me so busy I don't even watch TV anymore.

Man it was good talkin to ya!! Thanks for the instruction and especially the encouragement , you don't know what your help means to all us little guys. THANK YOU !! Mickey

Oh Micky your so fine, your so fine you blow my mind!!!

Shane - I MUST say that the reason that I am taking my Carter Starer (no hum in mine so far) to the gig is also because of Mickys youtube videos.

He is a GrEaT teacher! I really appreciate the methods that he uses!

I actually had a rehearsal last night for a 3 piece "set in" where I will be playing lead guitar on Saturday night and at the end of rehearsal I did a couple of songs on the carter and they were blown away. Couldn't believe I only had it for 10 days. I know where I sit in the food chain - EXTREME BEGINNER!!!

Around here, there are no active steel players so even me playing pretty basic was enough to give grins galore.

I have watched probably 40 of Mickys 159 youtube videos!

The gig is outside tonight so i am a little apprehensive regarding staying in tune.. but I think its a go!!!

Looking forward to making a post after the gig!!

Hopefully its not in the "for sale" forum!!!

Don

Shane - I played only on one song Friday night - like I mentioned it was outside and by time we were ready to play the other 2 songs it was dark. The stage lighting wasnt enough to make me feel comfy so I passed

However, the 1 song that I did play went PERFECT!!
I am excited to say the least.

peace!

Shane youn want to remember that less is more. You want to compliment the singer with fills and play your parts as needed. This is the most important thing that I have learned in my 30years of playing.
Sometimes I do get a little carried away and play the melody line. That's because I get into the song and when I am at home practicing the song, I sometimes forget when I am on the bandstand playing.
But most of all have FUN!

Don, One song under the belt!! Feels good don't it !!

Tommy right now I am not confident enough to play the melody.I stick to signature licks and as close as I can get to the ride. Sometimes it is the same couple of licks & ride over & over. But ya gotta start somewhere!

Mickey I can't thank you enough!! I know there are a lot of guys out there that feel the same. THANKS again !

Shane,
I would be willing to bet that after your 1000th gig, you will come off the stage thinking "I didn't practice enough". Gotta learn that new lick I heard and need to smooth out some of my licks I use. Gotta work on speed some more. I wonder if I'm ever gonna get this thing right.
I'd betcha a $100 and I don't gamble.
