Just got back from seeing Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang play twin pianos (and some fourhand) with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Quite a show! Interesting to see these two giants of their respective fields come together. Mostly it was Hancock showing off his classical prowess but Lang Lang has also recently started performing some improv, so the two of them did some free form improv on themes from Gershwin (must say I didn't recognize any of those themes, if they were really there!) They did a twin-piano version of Rhapsody in Blue that was pretty interesting. Good trade offs between the two but the conductor picked really strange tempos, sped up, slowed down, gave several spaces for improv cadenzas to occur, etc. Fun to hear but maybe not all that successful as a piece. Anyway, everyone had a good time, myself included.
