what is the string height above the pickup on the 8-string?

You can use 2 quarters or 1 quarter and a nickle.

if it seems to be too weak , go with a quarter and a dime.

It has a lot to do with how hard you pick and and downward bar pressure.

It can depend a lot on the type of pickup as well, for example the venerable supro/valco string through pup can be *very sensitive* - as little as a 64th of an inch adjustment of a pole can make the volume of one string twice as loud as its neighbor (on my supro, a bunch of playing can vibrate things out of whack over a period of months) and they sound best to me when they're as close as you can get them.

Generally, single coil pups like to be close - 1/8" just like Mr. Boards says - I think humbucking pups have a little more breathing room.
