I'm thinking about upgrading to Vista on one of my computers that has Windows XP on it.
Will I then be able to use the old Windows XP/OS installation disc on another computer?
Thanks. _________________ 1991 Emmons Lashley LeGrande II, D-10, 8x6/Session 400/RV3 |

If you're using a Vista upgrade disc then I think technically you're still using that XP license on that same machine.
However, if you're going to buy a full retail copy of Vista (which costs more than the upgrade), then you should be able to move the XP copy.
It depends on the verison of XP. OEM copies are licensed for a single motherboard. Retail copies, as far as I am aware, can be moved, as long as they are on only one machine at a time.
You need to have retail copy of XP...came in a box, doesn't have a Dell or other logo on it, isn't an upgrade version, etc. And a full retail copy of Vista for the new computer. Once the new computer is taken care of, you install XP on the other machine. If it doesn't activate, it will give you a number to call. This number is an automated prompt that basically asks you if you changed the motherboard. You say yes, and it gives you a number to put in in order to activate again.
If you get a real person on the line, just tell them that you're removing XP from one computer and putting it on another and they'll give you the code.
In case it somehow turns out that I'm wrong about being able to move the retail copy, please note that I'm not condoning breaking the license.
I guess Win7 is going to have a family pack available, no doubt similar to the one for OS X. About time. |

Leri:
Unless you have already bought Vista or have a strong over-riding reason to get rid of XP pronto, I would wait for Windows 7.
It will be released October 22. |

Thanks for the replies. I sure do appreciate them. I have not bought Vista yet.
I think I will consider the Win 7 option, good point.
Thank you'll very much. _________________ 1991 Emmons Lashley LeGrande II, D-10, 8x6/Session 400/RV3 |

Note that if you buy Vista now (between June 26 and Jan 31) you will can get the Windows 7 upgrade for free. But it's probably easier to just wait for 7.
The Vista upgrade advisor is worth running before the upgrade, and if Vista passes then I'm sure 7 will too.
