That's an open-string damper, to keep the open strings from ringing. I believe the first was designed by George van Eps, the brilliant chord-melody player. Sort of the antithesis of what most rock and country players go for with the open strings.

Hey, here's a discussion on Jennifer Batten's site: http://www.batten.com/String-Damper-Evolution.html

More details here: http://www.vintagearchtop.com/van_eps.htm

I probably should get one of those for my archtop - I tried a friend's several years ago and I liked it. One of the difficulties with the classic jazz guitar sound is the change in tonality when moving between fretted and open-string positions.

Cool clip, btw. I have always been a big fan of Herb's playing, especially his single-string work.

I have always been a Ray and Herb fan. If I had the time I would listen to them at least sixteen hrs a day and might even become a jazz fan. Those two were the reason I watched the old Merv Griffin show. Ray and Ella were quite a pair in the old days. cc
