I do that. I like the variety. Last Saturday I played guitar in a bluegrass band, Sunday I played Steel in a Country and Americana band. Playing with a pretty straight up Country band this coming Thursday. Fri. and Sat I'll be playing bluegrass guitar and dobro at a bluegrass festival and sneaking in a set on steel with a country band at the same festival and then Sunday with a little different formation of the band I play with on Thursday. I think I've got that straight.
Saturday at the festival it's gonna be a bit crazy. I'm playing with my bluegrass band from 1-1:45 on one stage and then steel from 2-2:45 on another stage. I'll have my steel and amp set up and ready to go before I start the first show. A couple of band mates will pack up my guitar and dobro after the first show so I can run directly to the other stage.
I like to pick. |

Larry, it's the Enumclaw Bluegrass Festival. At the Enumclaw Expo Center formerly the King county Fairgrounds. I know there's a band coming up from Oregon. Is that you?
I'm playing one set Friday at 8 PM then two on Saturday at 1PM and 6PM with my band. Playing steel with Paula Johnson at 2PM. |

Randy, I play with different bands on a regular basis. This week it's:
Wednesday....Lee's Diner in So.Norfolk, Va. with the Jack Bateman band from 7-9 PM. I'll be on lead guitar.
Thursday.....Portsmouth City Park amphitheater with the Classic Country Band from 6-8 PM. I'll be on pedal steel and mandolin mostly on this one....
Friday.....Virginia Beach Farmer's Market outside stage with "The Long & Short of It" (my band) from 7-10 PM. I'll be on lead, steel, Dobro & mandolin for this one........
I love playing with different bands as it gives you more ways to play and a lot of times you get to do the same tunes in other keys which keeps you on your toes........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

It's great if you can work with differin't bands and everyone knows and respects what each player is going to do.
However, it's also great when you work with the same band all the time and the Band becomes what we call "Tight". You get to know what each player is going to do, the band phrases together and you have starts and endings that you can apply to whatever song is played. Also, when the drums and bass are in sinc and the drummer knows all the kicks and subleties in a song, you usually become more inspired and play better. especially if the crowd is with the band and dancing up a storm. |

Randy, I'll try and make it over to see you at Tra's tomorrow night.
I play a few different instruments with various singers and songwriters regularly. I like variety and also love to pick. |

Billy, I agree about having regular members that have experience working together. Three of the bands I play with on a regular basis have things tight and arranged and I do enjoy that. It's difficult these days to have one band and keep steady work around here without alot of travel. During the 70's and until about the mid 90's I worked in bands that played 5-7 nights a week all the time. We would play a club for usually at least a month run and sometimes 3-6 months. There just isn't any place doing that any more so I've adjusted by playing in several acts and try to be versatile enough to fit into different situations. Sometimes it gets a bit complicated juggling all the commitments, but I like the challenge. From '81-'88 I worked with the same guitar player and we were totally locked in and intuitively knew how to play together. That was definitely a fun time. |

Randy,
It was a pleasure meeting you and the band. You make that new ZUM sound awesome. I appreciate you and Patrick letting me sit in. And thanks for the picks! The white plastic National® thumbpick is just right, and the red and black rubber coating on those fingerpicks helps on the fingers, as well as seeing quickly black=1st, red=2nd when switching from (another instrument besides båñˇjø or ∂øB®ø, to PSG.
Hope to see you tomorrow evening later with Mario Flores. I'm playing piano and acoustic guitar till 9 at the Hungry Horse—soon to be the Rebublic House— on West Ave. (not to be confused with the Thirsty Horse Saloon, at 2335 NW Military).
