In a rare move (soon to be not so rare), Microsoft has announced that they will be pushing out two new patches to plug critical vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and Visual Studio components. These updates will be released next Tuesday, July 28, 2009.
The vulnerabilities affect Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003 and 2008, Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 and Visual C++ 2005 and 2008, according to the security bulletin advance notification.
"The Internet Explorer update will also address vulnerabilities rated as critical that are unrelated to the Visual Studio bulletin that were privately and responsibly reported," Microsoft said.
Users who have turned on Automatic Windows Updates should watch for the updates beginning around 11 AM Pacific Time - 2 PM Eastern. They may require your PC to reboot automatically, so, if you are going to be away during the afternoon of July 28, save all work in progress and close any open Internet Explorer browsers.
If you have disabled Automatic Updates, please check manually on Tuesday afternoon. You can use the Start Menu Windows Update link, or your Internet Explorer link. The IE link to check for updates is found under "Tools" on IE 5 through 7, and under "Safety" on IE 8 and newer.
In a related side note, Firefox was updated on July 21, 2009, to version 3.0.12, to plug five critical vulnerabilities. You can update from a previous version of 3.0 via the browser's Help > Check for updates link, or download Firefox 3.0.12 from this page (older versions).
