I've been throwing around the idea of getting a differ pickup.. I've narrowed it down to 2. A Tru-tone, and the E-66(I think Question ).. Anyway, I understand this is yet another can of worms. But, im curious what everyone thinks. And, your opinions might help..!.. Thanks-n-advance

What is it you hope to accomplish by swapping out pickups? You've narrowed it down to a single-coil pickup and a humbucking pickup. What's on your guitar now?

TrueTone is single coil, E66 is humbucker. You need to decide which you want.
Also, you need to say what guitar it is for. If it is for the Carter, I didn't like E66 in a Carter. I did like Truetone but didn't want single coil. After several pickups, I ended up with XR-16 and stopped searching. It was the one.
For me.

I recently swapped the two TrueTones in my Carter D10 for the new Lace Alumitones available from Carter. Same great sound but no hum! Highly recommended.

My preference is for single-coil pickups.

I don't like the inherent 'muddiness' of humbuckers.

The downside, of course, is hum, but I have to live with that Sad

Just my opinion,But I think pickups are like EVERY THING else about steel guitars,I have a E66 in my MSA and love it,If I sold it the next guy may hate it and put something else in it. If we all liked the same thing,There would only be ONE brand of guitar,ONE kind of bar, strings, picks, seat, cables, etc. To each his own. DYK?BC.

As you can see from these posts Dave, pickups are really a matter of personal taste. I have tried a lot of pickups but I always seem to go back to Lawrence 710s. I just put a set in my Emmons SKH yesterday and loved them on the gig lastnight. I totally disagree with Richard, I like the clearness of the 710s.
You may have to try a couple pickups to see what you like.

Pickup-chasing gets expensive.

Each different type (single coil, humbucking, humbucking with coil tap(s) will sound different in each INDIVIDUAL guitar. Little setup details make a huge difference in what the pickup amplifies and how it reacts to magnetic field changes.

Players have used single-coil pickups for decades without significant hum problems, and there are all kinds of methods of hum-reduction...I would not even take that into consideration.

The other "mantra" - "single-coil = bright, humbucking = fat" is a fallacy. IT depends entirely on how the pickup is made. Likewise, "high DC resistance = high output, low DC resistance = low output" is another incorrect story I hear often. Some old lap-steel pickups measure 2-k ohms and will blow away 22k pickups as far as output (it's a function of wire gage, turns, bobbin, magnets etc).

My suggestion:

1. Develop a clear, concise description of your "target tone"
2. Call several pickup makers (and look at literature) - yes, they'll often try to sell what THEY make, but often you'll get a feel for what their main "signature tone" is OR what varieties they have.
3. Post again when you have a specific tonal description. Otherwise everyone will just post what THEY use (or like). That's useless information unless it pertains to the EXACT model you have....and then, as mentioned, there are still variations in guitars.
4. Consider a rewind of what you have OR custom-wound pickup. I've often had pickups custom-wound for particular tonal applications.

Hope that gives you a few ideas.

E66.
Buy a Rackmount EQ, it's more feasible and you can change tone on the fly, something to think about, providing you have a good pick-up in your guitar.
