I know this is late in posting, but wondered if anyone heard Derek Duplessie at the Dallas Show? I've heard his cd and he's only 13 and is amazing to me! Theresa |

David,
Thanks, I'll pass on the nice words indeed.
Derek needs encouragement like all players, but he's a very young player striving and wanting to learn! I sure hope the steel community will welcome someone so young with so much interest and talent!
He is our future! Theresa |

Derek is the coolest!
I gave him a bunch of Rhythm Tracks that I don't use anymore.
He was all over 'em in the Sierra room!
I understand he is playing a Franklin now.
Maybe lightning will strike twice!

I did not hear much but I did pass Derek quite a few times siting down in the Sierra
room and outside the Carter room.

Hi Theresa. I was hoping to see you and Gregg at the show and was disappointed that you weren't there.
Derek indeed has a lot of potential. To be as accomplished as he is at his age is pretty special. I think that by the time he is in his 20's he's going to be a real monster.
There seems to be quite a few teenage players these days. For a long time, all the faces at the steel shows were middle aged or older, and I've heard more than one person express concern that the instrument was not being taken up by younger people. Indeed, it seems to have skipped a generation. But with young players like Derek and a few others, I think the future of the instrument is in good hands.[This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 17 April 2002 at 07:53 AM.] |

Robert Rogers is the youngest "Monster" player I have seen so far.
He looks to be in his teens.
I heard him in Chattanooga and he plays incredibly well!... like a seasoned pro!

Pete,
Yes, Derek just bought a Franklin. Hal Rugg was nice enough to take it to him in Dallas. Thanks so much, Hal! I know he appreciated it! I may be wrong about his age he may be 12 and only has only been playing a year. We are happy he's playing, whatever steel he chooses.
I hope I hear Robert soon too! I think he in his early 20s. Theresa

Derek is the best 13 year old steel guitarist
I have ever heard. When I was 13 I had a bike. |

Thanks everyone for your nice words, and for all the encouragement I got in Dallas! I had a lot of fun playing and trying all the different steel guitars. I do love my new (used)Franklin!!!! It was so good to hear so many great players! Thanks Junior & Reece, for showing me some great stuff! And special thanks go to Butch Cornwell who shared his talent night time slot with me! And to Hal Rugg for bringing my guitar for me! Hope to make it back next year, and maybe even to St. Louis this summer. Thanks again, Derek
