Posted 12 Jul 2009 6:09 pm A couple of questions..........
|
|
This is the only model I don't have........but
On Jerry's personal g'tar, the cloth across the front was more like a burlap texture......not so colorful. Was that somebody's repair?
What's with the 'faux' pickup? I've never seen one with the screws for pickup poles.
Any info' you'd care to share will be gratefully appreciated. THANKS.... |

I'm sure that grille cloth across the front is original. It's what Rickenbacker used on their "Transonic" amps in the late '60s/early '70s. Led Zeppelin notoriously toured the States with those, I think in '72. |

Hi Ray
I will try to answer any questions to the best of my knowledge. Firstly the colorful material is transonic amp grill cloth, it is the same cloth that the Rickenbacker Transonic amps had. These amps were produced by Rickenbacker for only 2 or 3 years and are rare. Yes Led Zepplin used them on their 1969 tour, Jimmy Page played thru 2 of them. Steppen Wolf, Jeff Beck and Cheap Trick also use these amps. My guess is that at one time this steel had a matching Transonic Amp and was sold as set or was a custom order. One thing for sure is that this guitar left the Rickenbacker factory exactly as you see it now. Not many were made and I have never seen another like it. This guitar has been appraised by a company in NYC that deals only in vintage guitars they assure me it is absolutely %100 original. As for the faux horseshoe pickup I don,t have much info except that it is the pickup installed at the factory. It is a genuine 8 string Rickenbacker pickup. They stopped making real horseshoe pickups sometime in the 60's and this was the replacement. Although these pickups don't scream like original horseshoes they have a great sound. I'm not sure if Jerry Byrd was involved in the design of these pickups or not. Anyhow I hope this helps and thanks for the great work on your Jerry Byrd Fan Club. I too am a fan.
Best regards,
George M |
