Topic: Fret Board Markers - How important? |

OK - I'm a newbie to lap steels and this forum and I've got another question - I'm going to apply some art work to a Morrell lap steel guitar - Why, just because that's what I do - Anyway, what I would like some input on is, is the complete fret board necessary or can I just use small, but easily visible markers which would leave me more room to put more art work - The markers would be at the frets and not just the 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, etc. - Or instead of the fret line going all the way across the fret board could I use a small marker at each corner - I also realize not everyone on this forum would want art work on a lap steel - My motto has always been "If you can't play good - Play something that looks good!" Nice looking art Dennis 
Technically, markers are not needed but are very helpful to navigate by.
As long as whatever you do is easy to see and and navigate by should be fine.
My thought would be to embelish / celebrate the fretboard with your art. Lines and borders could be part of a vine(s), feather, leaf, scroll pattern, etc.

Hey Dennis, as Tom said, nice art!
I would be lost without the fret lines and the markers, but they don't need to be huge, just visible.
Of course, if you're doing some kind of psychedelic space rock theme, they need to be visible in the dark |

Tom - Mark - Thanks for your compliments and input - I'm not planning on a "psychedelic space rock theme" for the first one but I used to create custom watch dials and I could make frets and markers that do glow in the dark - I think I will try and incorporate at least the majority of a fret board for the first one - I'm planning on doing more than one lap top steel but coming up with the design theme for the first one is always the hardest for me  - DB |
