Howdy, y'all. Newb here. I am pulling out all the resources I know of (including this one, of course) in order to locate a good first steel.

In the course of that search I've recently turned up a possible local lead on a 3&4 Sierra Royalty SD10. It's in woodgrain finish. I can't find much info on these Royalty models... OK, I can't find anything on these models. It still looks like one of my most interesting options at this point, or at least it does from afar in my infinite ignorance.

Can anyone tell me anything about these? Ballpark value in average condition?

Thanks!

There's one in this old thread. You might find more in a search here. I wouldn't want to venture a guess as to the worth. Perhaps you can get some idea from this.

Generally, they are very sturdy guitars and that translates to weighty. Pro model, aluminum body, wood deck and neck.....folding legs. The Royalty series designates a 24" scale and having a keyhead as opposed to the Crown series with are keyless.

I played a Crown series for several years. It was a very good guitar and sounded nice.

Thanks, Jerry, for the testimonials. I have been searching but never would have found that FS Forum post either, since I didn't even think to remove the word "Royalty" from my queries. Thanks for that.

It looks like the seller may have given up on a forum sale at that price and gone elsewhere. That was also a price set arbitrarily (high? low?) from now-invisible eBay data in much happier economic times, priced on a more fully-featured version of the axe I'm looking at.

So my neophyte guess is, for a fair value, possibly take that number and chop off ...$400? ...$500? more to be safe...?

The world of secondhand steel is a truly befuddling one!

No problem RD. The model name is many times mispronounced and mispelled as Royality. There is no "i", but you'll find it posted that way a lot.

Value wise, I'd suggest you search for pro models with similar features and kind of go by that. Some of the old Sho-Buds Pro I and Emmons p/p's probably will go for more than that. If you could get it for what you are suggesting, you'd be getting it a very fair price, IMO.

Hard to find a modern pro model in decent condition with 3 & 4 for under a grand these days.

Thanks, Jerry. I'm still very new to this very esoteric and obscure collection of hardware, so I'm not really sure which guitars out there are similarly featured. Failing that, well, I've had to resort to things like this! I do appreciate your help.

One last question, if you don't mind. I see a lot of Sierras seem to have a modular drop-in pickup setup. Was this the case on your Crown? I know already that I'm going to need to lose the single coil PU that's in the Royalty I'm looking at, but I'm worried about having to find some kind of oddball proprietary replacement.

Right. My guess is that it's probably worth about $1000. I think you can still get the modular pickups from Sierra, or empty pickup housing to put whatever pickup you want in them. It's a pretty cool system.

The Sierra I owned had a triple range pickup. It was controlled by a switch at the end of the guitar beside the tone control switch.

I tried a couple other pickups, but always went back to the triple range that Sierra installed. I believe one switch position was humbucking as well. If I were you, I wouldn't discount the original pickup until you try it and as b0b states, there are certaintly other options available otherwise. I don't think this would be a major hurdle.

If housings / adapters are available for standard pickups semi-cheaply then it's not really an issue, and certainly I would give the stock PU a go. I just know that my current apartment-- a very old duplex with some suspicious grandfathered wiring-- brings out the hidden 60Hz didgeridoo in all of my Telecasters in a way I've never quite encountered.

Thanks, b0b and Jerry.

RD, I have one of these Guitars and I really like it a lot. It stays in tune, it does'nt move around when you use the knee levers. It sounds good with the original removable triple range pickup, but I use the George L's 10-1 pickup most of the time which is also removable. If you could pick one up that is in good condition for $1500 or less it would be well worth it and would last a lifetime.
