I love my '78 Webb 6-14-E amp, but I've never found a distortion stomp box that could make it sound "right" for rock music. Mostly, I think that an effect needs to have enough tone control to counter-balance the "scooped" voicing of the original 15" JBL speaker.

What are you other Webb fans using for rock/blues distortion sounds?

Bob, I recently picked up a Visual Sound Route 808, I like it a lot with my '78 Webb. Has a bass boost switch which really beefs up the sound. Highly recommended, though others will have differing 2ยข I know. But at least with my Webb, in comparison with 4 other brands (my local store loaned them all to me to take home and try out, wow!), this was the clear winner.

It is rather large; and I intend to get some dayglo tape for the tops of the 3 knobs, they are pretty, but they're chrome with small black lines as position indicator; virtually impossible to see onstage.

I used a Fultone Fulldrive II with my Webb for the time I was with the Mother Truckers. It has true bypass so the clean signal stays pure. It has three different types of gain and a double stage gain/boost feature. It's expensive but I get nothing but compliments on the tone of my guitar and/or steel from other musicians when I use that thing on the Webb and other amps.

You're welcome to try it anytime I'm not using it.

Dave

Bob, I did audition the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, reco'd by many here. It can give you great tone, but I found it a little too complicated for my tastes, too many knobs to twiddle. The Route 808 is easy, and the bass boost is like a one-click tone changer.

I see lots of guitar players using the Fulltone Fulldrive II, don't think I've tried that one yet, go visit Dave and give it a shot!

b0b,
I've got a BlueTube stomp box that is more on the blues side rather than a more radical rock distortion.

Sounds decent to me with my Webb and easy on the pocket book. Also, no wall wart. Direct wired.

I've got several different tubes, but never tried them out, so you might find one that will give more of a rock flavor. I just preferred the blues style.
