There seems to a lot of great courses out there for new steel players and I would like to know if any of you have any thoughts on which ones you thought were better or would recommend? (Both for E9 or C6) |

I'm taking a break right now from working on Jeff Newman's right hand alpha DVD. I've got that as well as his pedal steel guitar techniques course and both are very good, detailed instruction. Also, Fran from Jeffran Music is as nice of a lady as you will ever deal with. |

Jeff Newman (now deceased) has a lot of good courses on his site for people new to pedal steel, and those looking for further development.
His site is:
www.jeffran.com
Some of the material applies to both E9th and C6th with plenty of E9th material and a fair amount for C6th.
Try browsing the site and see what might catch your eye. |

Dear Scott,
I have been doing courses for both tunings since 1969 and have done over 35 over the years, so there are quite a few available. You might check my web site at: www.herbywallace.com for a selection of some of my courses. I recommend the HWP-300 as my best beginner course for E9th and my HWP-200 for C6th.
Thanks for looking,
Herby Wallace |

I can vouch for Herby's courses. hwp300 course he spoke of is the one that I started with years ago. Back before the internet, I was amazed at how many steel players I ran into around the country, that when I mentioned that I was from Chattanooga they wanted to know if I knew Herby. They knew of him because they had one of his courses when they started. I never heard anybody who thought they had wasted money on one of Herby's courses. |
