Walter:
Assuming you are talking about "Jamboree", this was your clip of the week about 18 months ago and the question was answered here:
http://tinyurl.com/nawswy
He also played on Copas' "I'm Tired Of Playing Santa Claus To You" and on several recordings with Paul Howard. All of these are among his very earliest recordings, circa 1947. |

Looks like I'm getting old!
I had totally forgotten about that I had already posted this clip before and about the responses. But it is a great track that is always fun listening to. Thanks for the reminder, Mitch!
Maybe some of the experts of the era, like Roy Ayres and Billy Tonnessen might chime in on this one, too.

Hi Walter. Thanks for the clip. Slim Idaho recordings are very rare. (Incidentally, his real name was "Dewey Adderhold.")
Hank Garland was originally called "Junior Garland" when he first came to the Opry in the mid 40's. He was later dubbed "Sugarfoot Garland" then later went by his actual name "Hank." The guitar player is likely him. Using the first few notes from old standards in his choruses was a common thing for Hank.
When Pee Wee King moved us from Nashville to Louisville, Cope stayed behind, and Hank was there at that time -- so the era is right for it to be Hank.
Here's a picture of Hank taken three or four years later. By then he was jamming in New York with guys like Charlie Parker.

Roy,
Thanks so much for your input. I have always considered it to be a privilege to be on the same forum with musicians that actually made the history we are talking about fifty or sixty years later.
Kind Regards, Walter _________________ www.lloydgreentribute.com |

I believe the guitar player was Junior (Junebug) Thomas who also played with Slim Idaho in Paul Howard's Arkansas Cotton Pickers. Hank Garland followed him in that band which also had Walter Haynes on fiddle. |

I received a reply from Kelso Herston. We were ALL wrong. Here's his reply:
Quote: |
"Roy, I just heard back from Bob Moore concerning the identity of the Guitarist playing on Jamboree. It's non other than Jabbo Arrington. This was recorded in Cincinnati in 1950, and Bob was playing Bass on the date.............kh"

Thanks, Roy!
Consider all the efforts that were made to find that out - from Roy to Kelso to Bob and all the way back...

Hmmmmm......., guitarist named here is Jethro Burns, no sign of Bob Moore. Check the date, I don't think Bob was on the recording scene in early 1947. King 688 certainly dates from before 1950. Didn't Marshall Barnes later play for Bill Carlisle?
Walter: do you have Copas Bear Family CD 16990?
It has a 40 page booklet and Jamboree is on it. I am guessing session details are included, but they may replicate what is below?

This same source says Garland played on a March 1947 session that resulted in Roly Poly; Opportunity Is Knocking At Your Door; Signed, Sealed, and Delivered; and Honky Tonkin'.
Edit:
Here is a pic of the back of the CD, showing a date of 1948 for Jamboree; I would assume that is a release date, not recording date. I found this on the Internet, but could not find a pic of the booklet inside to verify anything:
http://www.rocky-52.net/chanteursc/copas_c.htm
The above source gives a date of January, 1948. |

No, I don't have that one but that is interesting. I know that it is sometimes terribly difficult to get the information as so much is based on the memory of musicians who had long recording careers, with lots of different locations, fellow musicians and studios.
